My brother lives on St. Thomas USVI and said there were numerous boats with damage like this. Apparently the plywood/padding between the hull and the stand blew up or out and the stands went through the hulls.

He said boats in the water generally fared better than boats on the hard.

He was well prepared and lucky and had minimal damage.

Boat probably rocked over on the keel allowing the pad enough room to depart the area.. then when the boat rocked back down the stand poked a hole in the hull..

That's what happens when you make your own jackstands because you don't want to pay for the real deal. A brownell jackstand pad is positively attached by a screw shaft and the pad is fastened to the swivel. All the same, once a boat floats off the stands, you will have a problem. In hurricane land and in the low country you need high ground.

I suggested that to my brother and he said the pads were usually / almost always well fastened to the stands. That's why he thought this was unusual. I'm guessing you are correct though.

Kloudie,
Think that you're correct. From the looks of that photo, most of the boats are tilted over like dominoes. If a stand has an old pad on it, like most that I have seen, that rocking motion and ultimate falling of the boat likely caused the pad to part and result in a punctured hull.

How firm is the ground there. Looks like soft mud in the picture. How many stands per boat.

I would bet the yards insurance would not cover damage like that since that stand is a POS. Anyone that used it would be negligent.
