I'm still hoping for more time on board. We are tied up the next couple weeks, but day sails are possible as long as we have these pleasant temperatures.

We still have about a month to go before it's cool enough to put the boats in the marina. Come on out the sailing season starts in October.

Labor day is over, Mother Nature pulled the plug on summer. High temperatures barely reaching 60 degrees, blowing like stink, and lake effect rain showers all week. Thats because my son and daughter in law came here for the week to sail among other things. Now that the have to go home the weather will improve.
Helping my neighbor move his boat to winter storage today. My boat goes in on Monday provided I get a day dry enough and calm enough to get the sails off.

Oh hell, I love it here on the Barnegat in the fall. Weather is sometimes a bit cool, but the best part is all the Bennies are gone. No more Nicky Newarks in there wanabe go fast boats.

I agree. What are "Bennnies"? I'm not familiar with that colloquialism. Flys will hopefully be gone. They were/are fierce this year ... still were swarming on Friday last week. Last year, my last day sailing was the first weekend in December. It will be nice if we have almost 3 months remaining. Anchoring out is generally out of the question from October on. I might sleep over at the slip with an electric heater, though.

Nope, I went for protection from southwesterly winds so I was off Barnegat Light near High Bar Marina. I came in just after sundown and took a few pictures with my iPhone to text Sue and let her know I was tucked in for the night (Friday night). She's ready to stick that boot up my ash. This other one I like a bit more except that it missed the light. The lighting in the photos is surprisingly good. It was much closer to total darkness than the photos make it appear.

It was a pleasant, quiet night until about 4:00 am when the wind direction went 180 degrees and picked up significantly. We soon had our sterns pointed at the shore line and shallow water was uncomfortably close in my mind. I went from about 12' depth to 7' and the thought of the Danforth staying set after the shift was on my mind. I couldn't get back to sleep. The boat in the middle (furthest from me) picked up and left at about 6:30. I watched him head towards the inlet. His speed seemed a little tentative and after he disappeared around the corner, I went down below for breakfast. When I came back up, he was anchored again in the same spot. I did see a smaller Catalina (28' or 30'?) steaming out the inlet and didn't see him return. The wind came up a lot from the NE and I heard a lot of sport-fishing boat chatter on the radio ... one guy said he wasn't going out, so it must have been pretty rough in the inlet. I was in Long Branch at an ocean-front building today and conditions looked particularly benign for a change. Nice breeze from the west to flatten out the sea.

Sorry, Bennies is the local term for out of towners. The ones that clog up our restaurants, roadways, and waterways, with no regard for locals and the environment.
