CBS news just ran a story about guys running their fishing boats up into mangrove ( I think) swamps and tieing them off in the center of the channel to trees both sides. I was wondering if any of you guys think that way or is the possibility of getting blown way up on the hard a deterrent from that plan. Wishing you all good luck...

I saw a tv show called distant shores on YouTube and they weathered a bad tropical storm that way.
They tied multiple lines to the large root system of the mangrove trees in all directions. I have heard that a lot of people in the Caribbean use this practice. The mangrove roots are incredibly strong due to all of the roots systems are intertwined

I have seen sailboats tied in middle of canal with line to both sides and anchors front and back.

The mangroves are really interesting places. The thick rooted entangled trees do a great job blocking the wind. I've been in them on a kayak when a squall swept across the gulf. It was storming over our heads but calm on the water. Only issue with a hurricane I can see is the amount of debris that will be thrown about in the sustained winds. I your mast is taller than the mangroves your still going to be affected some what. Then there is the storm surge, so multiple secure lines would be a must.
John Tubb, I think he meant he would never stay on his boat in a hurricane again. During Katrina, I had my boat in the middle of the small canal behind my house, tied off to trees and anchored bow and stern. The boat was fine, but it was months before I could get it out of there because of all the debris in the canal.
Boats that deployed into the mangroves on the south coast of Grenada in 2004 were some of the few boats that survived. Those on the hard were dropped like dominos, many on mooring were surged off and blown to sea and then swept back on to the rocks. There are good spots and bad spots so you have to know which are available. At this point it would be a crapshoot, you have to know the hydrography well ahead of time.
