Any Pensacola area sailors on SO?

Curious as to what your thoughts are about the approaching hurricane Irma. My grand daughter just started at University of West Florida and I'm thinking about coming down from Ohio to get her if the storm tilts left. What's the current thinking?

My daughter went to UWF for both her undergrad and masters. She was an RA and a Hall Director as well. She will be fine there. The storm at the moment does not look like it is coming this way anyway. If she does have any issues anytime let me know and we can run over there to help her out.

It's not crazy to get her out of there. There could be significant problems in power shortages, flooding, loss of civil services, transportation, food supply. It could go on for a week or more after the storm. I would try to get an airline ticket to somewhere else. We did this for our niece several years ago during a weather event in FL. Didn't regret it.

Power rarely goes out there. The lines are underground and they are right next to the power plant.
What dorm is she in?

Should know more by Friday. If the track shifts farther West, get her out of there. Why take a chance? If a mandatory evacuation is called, it will be a nightmare trying to get to Pensacola to pick her up and getting out of there with the traffic outflow. These storm tracks can shift unexpectedly. Katrina was supposed to hit Appalachicola; however, it made landfall in LA approximately 290 miles farther West---so much for predictions.

Latest models are even more favorable for us. Good for us.

The farther out in time the wider the cone of probability gets. It is still to far out to predict what the track will be. As of now there is a 5-10% chance of storms winds of 39+MPH affecting Pensacola. At the 11:00PM update of 9/5 they indicated that most models had shifted to the East with the exception of the European model which continues to track it West into the Gulf. The irony is that the European model has been one of the most reliable in predicting past storm tracks. That in itself means nothing at this time other than the fact that the long range forecast is still unreliable. They have actually not moved the cone to the East as they are slow to react to updates; this is done to avoid having a cone that may wobble back and forth. The atmospheric factors that steer these storms are dependent on strength and timing. Even harder to predict is the intensity of a storm at approach or landfall. Give it a couple of days and there might be a better picture. Consider in your traveling plans the availability of fuel, hotels and the traffic.

Thanks for your suggestions. Special thanks to Rick Webb. We're watching the storm track. I'm guessing Friday we will have a better idea. We are supposed to be in southwest Virginia on Monday to grandparent are other granddaughter while kids are in Ireland. This retirement thing gets complicated.

I Think your more likely to be in the path in VA than she is here.

They do a good job of taking carte of the kids there, if that helps you relax I know it won't, much.

When you do get down there be sure to have a burger at Grover's.

Yes things are looking better for Pensacola. The National Hurricane Center is adverse to moving the cone of uncertainty away from heavily populated areas but they have shifted it to the East which leads me to believe the indicators are pointing to an earlier turn Northward and a track up the East Coast. Continue to monitor the updates for a couple of more days.

Hi Rick,

She is in Argo dorm. Things look pretty good for Pensacola right now. She had an escape plan on her own as one of her new friends invited her to her home in Alabama should they need to leave. My grand daughter is from south of Daytona which is 6 hours away from Pensacola and not looking too good at the moment.
Thanks for your offer of help.

Argo is way up on the hill so no flooding there. Glad to hear she had a plan all along. Couple of time while my daughter was there six of her buds would pile into her Focus and go to New Orleans. Our only clue was when pictures of them showed up on Facebook, so Alabama is a much better plan.

The Treasure Coast could take a wallop from the surge hopefully it move across there quickly.

BTW UWF has a sailing program that operates out of Pensacola Yacht Club if she is or you can get her interested in it.

The offer stands if she needs anything .

Hi Rick,
She is in Auburn Al for the duration. Hope things work out well for Pensacola, Ft. Walton Peach. Irma keeps edging west so who knows.

She is probably closer to it in Auburn than Pensacola. Same with my daughter she is north of Atlanta and will likely see more rain and stuff than we will here.
