I looked at a 1985 28 today which is for sale. I could only spend a limited time on the boat due to the marina person having to be present. It was getting dark, and I could not find the location of the batteries. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks

OEM location was on the starboard side of the engine compartment, accessible through a hatch that opens in the quarter berth.
Thanks for the info. I have a deposit on the boat, she has some nice options, but needs a good cleaning. Ran the M12 , purrs like a kitten. Has anyone have any input on SailCare? Sails are older, but I would like to sail her before making a new sail purchase.
If the sails are original they're probably "blown out" beyond what a sailmaker could restore. You can still use them but don't expect great performance, and do expect some extra heeling and weather helm compared to new sails.
Yes, SailCare's cleaning an re-resining process won't do anything to help stretched out sails.
I'm at the point where I don't believe in that process at all. If the sail is shot, it's shot and time for a new one.
However, I saw a Catalina 22 out yesterday, that had such a shrunken bolt rope that the end of the boom was hanging down at an angle, and the head of the main was over 6" from the top of the mast. Obviously, that old sail is shot, and probably feels like a bed sheet. Still, if they released the bolt rope so that the luff was closer to what was originally cut, that sail would at least hoist to the top of the mast, and the boom would set level. I can only content myself by saying "Glad it wasn't my boat."
We've used Sail Care twice....once on our Catalina 22 and once on the current O'day 272....both times made a major difference on the sails....enough of a difference that we did not feel ripped off.....on the 272, the did both

I think it's good for dirty sails, but it won't do anything for a stretched out sail, unless SailCare was able to do a recut on the sail. Of course, releasing a shrunken bolt rope can also do wonders for the set of a sail, but still that sail would probably have too much draft, and wouldn't respond much to sail controls on account of the rest of the shape being blown out.
I'll be the first to admit I have spent way too much time around racers, and have a very racer mentality when it comes to the condition of sails. I was actually kinda shocked to find that Olympic level Laser racers use a new sail for every regatta. That's a lot of new sails. And the 1 regatta sails have plenty of life left in them for the average club racer.
I have a 1984 28. Second ODay. First was a 25, until Hurricane Sandy took her. My post is to be wary of fuel tank. Mine looked fine and sound until it leaked this past July. No forewarning. Not too bad. Caught it early and had it replaced with new plastic tank. They can and do corrode after 33 years.
Sail Care will tell you if your sails are worth re-conditioning . If they are not, they will send them back or throw out for you
One other thought. Be sure the screws which attach the electric fuel pump to the fuel tank bulkhead do not pass through the plywood of the bulkhead and 'touch ' the metallic fuel tank. Over time galvanic reaction will cause a pinhole 'hole' in the tank and result in a leaking tank which you will have great difficulty in identifying. Put in a buffer piece of plywood to maintain separation between screw tips and tank. Personal experience!!
As long as we’re talking about pinhole leaks in the fuel tank - Also watch out if there’s a bonding wire running under the tank that could come in contact with it. The copper wire will cause galvanic corrosion on the tank floor.
