Sail question

Crusers Hunter 30, thinking of new sails. What benefit/compromise (other than UV protection and appearance) comes from the colored strip on the leach of the jib? (Sorry there must be a name for it.

Besides the obvious benefit, the obvious compromise is weight.

You might consider an Asian direct loft. If I was going to race I'd go local but for cruising you can measure as well as the loft sales person. I have a cruising spinnaker direct from Hong Kong if you want to see the quality of stitching. Just let me know we can meet at the boat and go to Scuttlebuts for a beer afterwards.

I was thinking of going through this website. If for no other reason because they're supporting our favorite foum. Their prices are competitive and customer service is great.

you can consider a Dacron strip, instead of the Sunbrella UV protection. The sail would fly better, but the Sunbrella would last longer.

Since UV is hard on sails and stitching the suncover protects the headsail when furled. It's sacrificial and can be replaced by a sail loft when it eventually gets ratty. Cheaper than replacing the whole sail before its time.

You can do it in white if you don't like color. But then you couldn't tell if the wrap "barber poles"....Amazing how many barber poles I see in marinas. Everything white is not protected....

Mine has a white cuff on red sunbrella cover so it should barber pole

Had the UV Cover fixed over the winter, the stitching was coming apart the PO had not had the sail serviced and the cover was coming apart, the loft had to cut the leach back and then add a white strip to put it back together.

I prefer a sock, keeps the weight off of the sail, is easier to replace than having to take the sail to a loft for repairs and prevents the sail from unfurling in a blow. Takes a bit more work though. My 2 cents worth

As mentioned, you can put a white UV sacrificial cloth on the leech and foot which is lighter than sunbrella and won't impede your boat's sail performance because of it. If you have a big old tubby cruising boat that doesn't perform well anyway, then sunbrella might be the better aesthetic choice because the color can match the rest of your canvas.
