Some thoughts: First of all, a kick up rudder is usually designed that way along with a rudder headstock to allow for it. You would have to engineer some form of cheek plates to allow the lower part of the bade to pivot. Whatever you would do would need to be pretty laterally strong as well as torsionally. Most O'day rudders I know of are fiberglass shells over foam, so if you were to cut yours in half, you'd have to do a lot of repair with glass to seal it up. It might just be easier to find a similar sized headstock, and build a new rudder blade out of laminated mahogany. It's not that hard to router out a NACA foil profile. Search around on the interwebs for people who have done this type of modification, doesn't matter on what boat, so you start to wrap your head around what's likely involved. Also, examine closely the headstocks of other boats with a kick-up rudder. Your existing setup could be fabricated to a custom design, and then keep your old rudder assembly as is for resale or spare.

Thanks Brian
That sound like a good plan...I am going to check into fabricating the cheek plate and making a Mahogony tiller... I would like to know if someone has made one for their O Day..thanks for the response....Fair Winds and Following Seas...

I have a stock rudder from an Oday 222. Its in good shape--but I would recommend adding a couple of layers of 6oz s glass as most stock rudders are not to be trusted.

You can PM me if interested in an used stock rudder from a 222 Oday.

The 222/192 rudder does kick up, although there was only a downhaul line fitted stock. I have fitted an uphaul line based on Joe Alves' "Trinkka," but it serves only to hold the blade up, not remotely raise it from the fully down position. The headstock was fabricated with 2 aluminum side plates, and spaced with SS tubular spacers that were riveted between the 2 side plates. When new, it might not have been bad, but over time these rivets loosen, and the headstock gets excessive twist in it. The blade gets a side to side moment, which causes a shear in the headstock plates at the pivot bolt. Basically, looking at the headstock from aft dead on, it's like the 2 side plates are a parallelogram with the spacers. Some folks have replaced the spacers down the front and back of the headstock with wood; I filled as much space in the headstock as possible with a massive solid teak block. I probably overdid it, but I always say (or what seems to happen) "if it's worth doing, it's worth over-doing!" :D Others have also sistered additional AL plate in the lower headstock where the blade head overlaps the headstock plates. I didn't do this, but perhaps should have. I have pictures of all of this if needed.

I think the biggest consideration is the spacing of the gudgeons on your transom and the pintles on the headstock. Moving the pintles on the headstock might be the easier proposition.

I don't know that an all mahogany tiller is very common. I think the stock tiller on an O'day is often solid ash. The laminated tillers from Ruddercraft are ash and mahogany, I think. Some tillers may also be white oak. I'm not an expert at selecting wood for various purposes, so take that with a grain of salt, but then again, axe handles are ash, so that lends credence to the strength of ash for a lever arm :D:D:D

yes it kicks up. Its from a 1984 Oday 222 that had broken from its mooring and deck and hull were badly broken about about 2 or 3 feet back from the bow. I think you can find mods to stiffen the alum. top on this web site. I have also found simple bushings that can be used that take out all the play and it feels "like butter". The two flaws in the stock rudder are too little glass over the foam core and too thin alum. used in the top head of the rudder. Both of these are easily (and cheeply) modified
I think you have to email or PM me to talk about buy or sell anything. mmehne47@hotmail.com

I don't have the pictures with me right now.... but I have a set of pictures of the kick-up rudder that O'DAY offered as an option on the 20. It is basically the same shape/dimensions as the fixed one but made of mahagony and aluminum. As Brian S mentioned, the fixed rudder was a fiberglass shell filled with foam, not easily converted to kick-up. I'll post those pics tonight if I get a chance to. You could also search this forum, because I think I've posted the pics before. The basic design is the same as the kick-up rudder for a MARINER, just larger and as I say.... near copy of the dimensions of the original fiberglass, fixed rudder.

Looking at those pics, I see how it wouldn't be too difficult to fab a whole rudder assembly, given that you source pintle brackets, plate aluminum, have a band saw to cut the plates, and thickness planer to space inside the plate. Oh, and that's provided you are ok fabbing a mahogany blade. While you were at it, I'd use a true NACA profile for the blade. Not sure which profile number is favored, but I've stumbled across it before, I could find it again.
