When sailing closer to the shore, close hauled, often you get a small lift - a "shore lift" - and this can let you sail further before you absolutely have to tack away.
Of course, while pursuing this beneficial change in wind direction, you may run aground, too. :)

What you describe as a "shore lift" is caused by the on-shore wind being compressed and therefore sped up near the shore-line. the higher wind speed allows a slight course change to windward. How'd I do? ;)
I have my Garmin depth warning set at 20' (average lake depth at HP is ~45') the warning sound the Garmin makes is very hard to ignore ;) .

That might be a little aggressive if you know the lake. 10 should be more than enough unless there are rocks involved. We're set at 4, and although the bottom is mostly loon poop, sticking a wing in it is way worse than a fin.
