Reefing advice

The wing nut is a good idea. If I go with the 2nd ring I'd need someway to attach it to the strap or to existing ring. The rings are closed so cannot be connect to one another. Unless there is an opening ring somewhere? While I'm at it, when out sailing last week end the clew came loose from the outhaul and what ever rigging component was there went into the drink. I'm not sure what it was. I jury rigged a replacement with a short piece of line. What is the right attachment rig component for this purpose? ... one that won't come off again??

If you only need an inch or so to extend the reef you might be able to use a long D shackle. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/ronstan--forged-d-shackles--P002_060_004_004

Shackles are often used to attach the outhaul to the clew of the main. Lots of different kinds available. Look around and see if one might work for you.
