Stern gland/packing nut leak

Repacked with correct sized graphite material, correctly measured and cut at 45 degrees, laid in three pieces staggered at 120 degrees. Tried adjusting the nuts in and out. One position (in) it runs hot, slacken off slightly it leaks. Any ideas? Please Frustrated

I restuffed my stuffing box last spring and found that it took a couple of weeks for it to settle down. I presume that the graphite needed to absorb water and expand to create a proper seal. Hopefully this is what you are experiencing and it will soon go away.

Don't think I ever had the graphite stuff. I think it was a wax cord of some sort. Going back ~20 yrs..I allowed a drip every 30 sec or so and it didn't heat up. No drip, no cooling water replenishment. Let it drip and keep an eye on it..Have a saildrive now..

Personally,

I hate packing glands. I put up with the re-packing & the drip-drip until
finally, I replaced it with a PSS waterless shaft seal. Maintenance free
& I have NO green water in my bilge. I replaced mine during a
bottom paint job. Several friends were impressed & changed out their
packing glands also.
