I've asked a lot of people in their 90s and one 100 year old person what they attributed their longevity too. Most, somewhere in the conversation, say they don't let things people do get to them. People like the OP mentioned get joy out of getting you upset. I try not to acknowledge their actions and move on in my mind as quickly as possible.

I have considered installing a couple of torpedo tubes. Who's laughing now.......

Sounds like the guy thought he was pulling a prank on someone he knew. Return the favor..... like maybe 10 lbs of dog doodoo on his helm seat..

This is so absolutely true, and so gosh darn hard to implement for so many folks, including me, but worth it, if you can get to that place. A mantra that helps me is "you can't fix stupid".

I once asked an 87-year old acquaintance the same question. His reply was "for any area of my life where I am less than 85% happy, I make an immediate change". Great advice, and I was able to follow it yesterday when a client was really rude to me, so I fired her. Life is just WAY too short.

I recall how a friend of mine dealt with her teenage daughter: "Mom, how can you just ignore the phone?". Answer: "If it's important, the police will come".

Ah, this one is a MUCH easier adjustment for me. When my phone rings, and I don't reach for it, someone inevitably asks "aren't you going to answer that"? Nope, my phone is for my convenience, not the caller's.

Recently lost a mentor, 95 years young. Sweet Mississippi boy. Babe-magnet to the end. He joined the Canadian Air Corp in 1940 at the age of 16 to get into the fight. He was the lone survivor of his bomber crew and spent most of the war being marched from one POW camp to the next and eventually far east to avoid the approaching allies. We sailed together for years and I never saw him get perturbed about anything, always had a smile for everyone. Always a gentleman. He had plenty of reasons to hate and hold grudges but he never did. Loved life to the end.

Two words. Hanlon's Razor.
To save you from having to look it up, its the aphorism that states: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.
If you really care, why not do something about it other than rant to the people you know will agree? I suggest encouraging your local US Power Squadron to have a class at the marina on safe boating and even offer to speak on sail / power interactions. Join up while you're at it as USPS is a great service organization. I've found that most power boaters, particularly with larger boats (normally on their third boat by that time), are courteous and safety oriented. Of course the jerks are not the type of people that sign up for safe boating classes.

My only wish about power boaters is that they would realize that staying on plane is much better than slowing down. Fly by me as fast you can. There is very little wake, and the time it takes for you to go by me is short. So often, they think they are being courteous by slowing as the go by, not realizing they just tripled the size of their wake.

There are some who feel that the US Postal Service is only marginal...:yikes:

I led them into about 1 1/2 ft of water whereupon their boat ran aground in mud
Andrew... you might have had a bit of devil in you to take such action...

I had a partner in a sailboat for 20 years that was of that same generation. Almost impossible to rile him. If something did get to him he would shake his head and say "Horse$#!% and 2 is 8" and move on. It had no meaning but cleared his head from the incident. I use the phrase now and it works at clearing my mind and if they hear you it puts people back on their heels trying to figure out the meaning.

Sure it has meaning; 6+2=8
or $#!% +2=8
or Horse$#!% +2=8

So Horse$#!% has value now. Great I can post more often. Since we are all sailors here maybe we should call it Bird$#!% + 2 is 8 because I don't think any sailor values bird bombs. ;) I have decided by the way the responses keep coming so fast that half you people must be retired.

We had a fella with a big ole powerboat that came down the fairway at the marina one night...he was fueled with alcohol. He managed to rip cleats out of boats etc with his huge wake. One call was made to the port police who ended up reading him his rights. hmmmmmm...not a pleasant night for him especially when he got the bills for all the damage to gel coat etc.

Seems like every marina is required to have at least one jacka$$. We have one that apparently cannot read the no-wake signs, has noisy parties late into the night, and acts like a loudmouthed jerk. When somebody does try to point out the error of his ways, the junior high school playground bully side of his personality magically appears. He has been visited by the local constabulary on a number of occasions and still doesn't get the message. He has also been visited by the Coast Guard for running his inflatable at full thottle past their station which just happens to be at the mouth of the marina.
He was thrown out of the marina (a renter). Came back the following year (bought the slip!)

Glad my marina is sailboats only. I'm still not sure how many actual leave the marine...

My slip is perpendicular to the river and downstream from at least (4) marina's, there is an endless parade of boats (mostly the stink version) coming and going on the river, for 99% of them they are very good about speed and courtesy, the 1% well they are what they are, nothing I can do to change that so I just let it go by, one thing for sure, seems like the louder the boat the nicer the babes are on the boat........so I guess the scenery makes up for the noise.

We hear the words, but without pictures it is nearly empty noise....
Thats a great point John, will have to bring my camera with me with my 200 mm lens, that should get me close enough to capture some interesting shots! Will report back soon
