Tranny went south

Hi all,

While doing an overnight into Beaufort NC I must have struck something in the water as we entered the marked entrance. We were into a strong current when we heard the thump and clatter from below. With no drive to turn the prop we slowed to 1kt only because we had our sails up and luckily were able to get a tow on a Sunday morning.

Forward and reverse gave that grinding sound so I'm thinking maybe the spline on the shaft let go. There was a dredge working nearby so I was thinking maybe something fouled the prop. I just had an overhaul done on the transmission last summer. There could have been so many worse places to get stuck.

I'm sorry for your loss. There should be a plethora of good mechanics in Morehead City, just across the creek, as it has a pretty busy commercial fishing port.
As for a place to get stuck, Beaufort, NC? You could have done a lot worse.

All U Get; Which marina are you going to. If going up the ICW, the core creek bridge where the coast guard I think is there is only 64 height clearance. Just wanted to let you know. I was a dealer for Hunter and Catalina for that area but now retired.

What kind of transmission? Town creek marina right past the drawbridge is the closest repair place. Also try L&M Marine service ask for Mike Collins.

Velvet Drive with 1.88-1 gears. I talked with Precision Marine and will have it pulled tomorrow. Think it might be a gear that let go. Can't discount any other issues either. ( sitting on the Beaufort Docks)

I've gone through before with an eye on the tide boards if they have them. We made it through the Wickerson when the wind blows right.
Just need everyone to not flush for a week and I'm good.

There are boards but it can be a fast current at that bridge. Jibes138 thank you for letting us know about the others as it was Town Creek I was thinking of. First time at Town Creek, I had a heck of a time with No See Ums.
As for Beaufort, at least that is a good place to be. Beautiful, quaint and not too big. I once had a customer whose boat was hit by lightening there and was able to finish up repairs by 2 a.m. to get him back on his way once.

Be aware they have now closed up the span for the new bridge after the draw bridge. No more real tall rigs can get up to Jarrett bay or further north. Height will be the same as other ICW bridges. The drawbridge is still working as the new road is not complete yet.

OK tranny out, diver had to pull fishing line from around the shaft to slide it back enough to pull the tranny. Nothing bent or broken below the waterline. However the splines seem to have broken off in the coupler causing the loss of power to the shaft. That was all new last summer so I'm not too happy.

Do you think the fishing line was binding the shaft putting excess load on the spline? Doesn't seem like that should break anything. Any impacts on the way up the coast? I'll try to swing by and say hello Thursday. I'm getting re powered so boat is on the hard and I'll be checking progress.

I don't think the fishing line was enough to bind it, but sliding the shaft back it jammed against the strut. My guess is that last summer when I had a seal replaced, the new parts weren't particularly right or over torqued. Painful either way.
We're just off Queen Anns Revenge if you come by.

Ouch! I don't understand... is that the output shaft? Looks like a locking nut was holding them together? maybe loosened over time allowing spline to wear. Doesn't look like the splines have been sheared.

Sorry to hear that you are having issues, but, when I read the title of your post I immediately thought of a different tranny, don't know why could have something to do with my demented mind.
