So I'm looking at my manual and I'm about to pull the trigger and replace all my running rigging but i have some confusion to clear up first..

I see there is a Vang line short and a Vang line Long

Can someone please explain this to me - I have only have 1 Vang clutch so I am at a loss. I am also currently 7000 miles from my boat in the land of sand that is Iraq so I cannot go and take a look to clear this up.

Thanks

Maybe led further aft? As I get a better understanding of how to use a vang, I wish the line was closer to the helm.

Possibly, there is a vang with a cleat at one end, either on the boom or at the base that constitutes a "short" one. Then there may be a version of a "long" vang that routes the line off someplace, over there and back here and terminates someplace closer to the cockpit. Any chance of a picture from what you're looking at?
One thing is for sure, you don't need 7000 miles of line, although it may be fun to pull it.

Many rigid vangs (like my Garhauer) have a fixed line thru pulleys on the vang body that increase the advantage of the vang line that runs to the cockpit. I'll try to post a pic of similar.

Rope vang, oddly enough, has no more line than a gas one. As Teds picture shows. Our Garhauer is the same.

And we have a winner..... I totally erased that from my brain... Thank you!

My Seldon RodKicker vang had a fiddle block with a cam with the line on a cleat on the mast for storage. Got tired of having to go on deck up by the mast to adjust the vang.
Reversed around the fiddle block with cam to the top and ran the line to a newly installed block at the base of the mast and through the organizer back to the cockpit through a clutch.
Maybe there is varying line length depend on where you control adjust from.

If delivery will mess you up, order both 10' - 1/2" and 46' - 3/8" the worst that could happen is you end up with 46' of 3/8 left over, if delivery timing is not that critical then you could wait til you get home, I am guessing you need both.
