While we wait for weather to turn here at 38 North, check out this report on H. Matthew. Interesting tidbits galore. Record storm surge as far north as Hatteras, a huge strengthening into Duck, North Carolina. We knew Matthew stuffed the Southeast coastline but wow is was a storm that raged and rebuilt several times. Cool multimedia report for the weather geek and hurricane chaser. From our friends at NOAA.

Any news on when the dismal swamp canals will reopen? There are two routes. Are both closed?

One item of note to our buddy End80 and his stranded Grampian - the SE coast saw record storm surge levels that broke records back to the 1940's. He got floated way beyond any normal water level. At Ft. Pulaski Georgia the surge was predicted to be nearly 8 feet above MHHW...only the luck of an ebbing tide mitigated the surge to 5 feet.

Per legend and myth, Cape Hatteras managed to strengthen the storm, putting increased and record surge winds into Hampton Roads. Hurricanes are fascinating creatures.

Dismal Swamp canal is closed until at least late April. Albemarle canal is open. ACOE is doing the work but is being funded under limited federal funding (Continuing Resolution)

Thanks Gunni Albemarle canal was not on my bucket list but I may have to go that route. I'm planning a trip for mid June and hoping to start either in Norfolk or Elizabeth City and head south. I guess I need to stay flexible.

For an early summer trip I would prefer the Albemarle route if only because it would get me to Manteo and the Pamlico Sound.

Thanks... I've sailed from Elizabeth City to Manteo and from Swanquarter to Ocracoke to Oriental but I have not tied it all together yet. I'd like to go from Norfolk to Morehead City but I would be happy to get to New Burn. Two summers ago, I planned to do a long cruise in that area and got chased out by Hurricane Arthur. Last summer I tried again and split my ankle open on a slimy rock and it got infected and I had to leave. So third time is the charm (I hope).
