So speaking of denuding lifelines. Once you've removed the cracked and brittle white covering, is there somewhere that you can specify length and color of padded lifeline covers and have them made? I think they are typically (homemade) by covering pipe insulation. Should be enough circulation under the covers for the wire to 'breathe'.

:) maybe on this forum they are, but generally are they are not homemade. You can find them at several different lengths designed to fit between stanchion bases.

If you really are planning on using them as lifelines, I would suggest not denuding them, but just simply replacing them with new SS wire.

I am about to re rig, and as part of the process pull the chain plates out for inspection and my rigging a) looks pristine and b) was previously replaced 10 years ago with all best quality materials. (Off topic but I am also going to have the keel bolts torqued.)
Ensuring the safety of your boat and doing routine maintenance is just part of the cost of ownership. The things that keep the water on the outside, hold the boat upright, steer, keep the mast up and prevent fires from breaking etc out need to be maintained without compromise.
So just figure you are going to replace that rigging.

Yes I believe I agree. Thank you to everyone one for your advise and insight. Buying a $30,000 boat for $1,500 usually does involve work and investment. The engine is out. I might go electric. Bottom has not been done in at least nine years. The hull has some rub spots . Im still looking.
