Fresh Water Tank

In a badly needed upgrading of my fresh water tank which is located under the v-berth I noticed the tank is a metal fuel tank. It appears that it was the original tank that was installed the year the boat was built in 1978. Did Hunter use metal fuel tanks for their fresh water systems back then? Just curious.

Several possibilities... As far as material is concerned, the only difference between an aluminum fuel tank and an aluminum water tank is the fittings. FMT supplied both, so it could be a replacement water tank (aluminum water tanks have an average lifespan of about 20 years and your boat is twice that old) that was mislabeled...or FMT just put a fuel tank label on all of 'em.
I THINK FMT is still in business...so I'd try them first for an identical replacement.

Just a comment from our recent experience.. we're going to replace our tank also. I found the exact replacement but it won't fit unless we cut a huge hole in the hull! Therefore we will be installing a bladder.

I'm going the bladder route as well.

Don't be too quick to jump on that solution. There are often 'hidden' ways to gain access to a space without resorting to a Sawzall. Find someone who's intimately acquainted with Hunters of that era...they'll know.

I definitely wouldn't go through the hull to replace a tank. Waaaaay too much work and you will be compromising the shape and God knows what else depending on your skills. It would be much easier to take a sawzall to the berth side and you can then do it so that you can install fiddles and screw the surface back in place where if you ever had to do this again, you didn't have to use the saw again. Just think it through.

Interesting how they changed production, my 1981 H27 has factory fiberglass tanks built-in. The lids are heavy fiberglass that are sealed with 5200 & SS screws every couple of inches. The bladder sounds like the easiest thing to do in this case. Good luck with it!
