When we bought our boat, the antenna had been removed and stowed below, and the VHF seemed to work ok, on both transmit and receive. I had a rigging inspection done, and while the guy was up the mast, I had him reinstall the antenna (which was not in good condition). Now the VHF doesn't work so well. Not sure what I'll do next, likely replace the antenna, but with a handheld on board it is a lower priority than mushy soles and tracking down leaks.

I suspect this antenna was also struck. It has some marks at the base that are likely scorches, rather than rust.

Many older vhf radios will blow the final if full transmission load is put out with no antenna attached. Might not have a radio just a door stop. Get it checked out.

I have lost a few antennae trailering. I guess the road vibrations walk the threads and it comes un-screwed.

I now remove mine (and the windex) before I hit the road.

Yes, this will get you on the air for a very limited distance, but eventually it will destroy your radio's power amplifier. Trust me on this.
