SIMRAD I20 Pkg

I bought a Simrad I20 Pkg from Defender (good price $664) for Depth, Temperature, Speed and Trip Log Data, Wind Angle and Wind Speed. Includes IS20 Graphic, IS20 Combi and IS20 Wind display's. This system runs Simnet but is NMEA 2000 compatible.
I also purchased a B&G Vulcan 5. This is unit runs on a NMEA 2000 network.
I am wondering if any one has tied Simnet to NMEA 2000.
I think all I need is the Simnet cable to Micro-C female cable that connects to a NMEA 2000 product.
Any help would be appreciated.

Good deal.

Simnet IS NMEA2000; with different cable connectors. A bridging cable will cost you about 30 bucks. Be careful about the male/female thing; in N2K they talk about the adapter, not the individual pins. Just search for:

By the way, you can get a B&G Vulcan 5 for $419 from Defender with a rebate from B&G for $100 (Visa Card). Total cost $319. I think thats a pretty good deal. By the way I am putting this on my Catalina 27.

Very nice package! I am also intending to get a B&G Vulcan. I was going to figure out how to link my Simrad IS12 wind instrument, but maybe the better option is to get an IS20 package like you have. I have Datamarine speed log and depth. I'm wondering if the thru-hull transducers can fit the existing sleeves so I don't have to change thru-hulls. I've had my IS 12 wind instrument for many years now and it has been flawless. I have a Simrad Wheel Pilot in the box, never installed yet. I'm hoping to link this with the chartplotter as well.

I also have 2 different speed and depth transducers. The IS20 only has 1 sensor ( not including the wind sensor) which I hope fits my depth sensor hole. If hole is too big I will make a sleeve and glass it in place while the boat is out this winter.

Scott... I recommend getting the Vulcan 7 over the 5.... The larger display is well worth it.. The Vulcan 5 does not come with charts... just background map.. so the $100 rebate would have to go towards chart program. I bought my Vulcan 7 at a West Marine discount day.... saved $50! My Vulcan 7 came with the "Insight" mapset... You can PM me if you want more detail... Your wheel pilot will probably work if it has Nmea 0183... same for your wind instrument... but probably not the Datamarine. Call the Simrad tech hotline for verification.

Yes, I planned to splurge for the 7. The wheel pilot does have nmea 0183 & so is the wind instrument. I figured the conversion would be simple enough. I thought the Datamarine speed log might be able to link with some kind of conversion. If not, converting to IS20 combination may be a good option.

I just bought an IS20 from Defender. But I missed out on the Vulcan 7 rebate. Has anyone completed the installation, and successfully integrated the two systems? Did you have to convert the IS20 Simnet to a NMEA 2000 backbone ?

Hey,
Santa brought me a Vulcan 7FS. I installed it last week and just played with it for a bit. I removed a Garmin 740S for the Vulcan. Installation consisted of removing the 740 (cut two wires) and crimping three wires (power, power sense, and ground). Then I just connected the NMEA 2000 cable and powered it on. A few minutes later everything was communicating and working fine.
I have a Raymarine Evo 100 AP (uses NMEA 2000 / Seatalk NG), older ST60 depth / speed / wind (converted Seatalk to Seatalk NG), and Simrad RS35 VHF / AIS (NMEA 2000). I needed to make a few setting changes and then everything communicated nicely).
FYI I have the standard Insight charts which are OK but I sent in the rebate to receive the HD charts which I hope are better. The charts on the Garmin 740S were nicer (I don't remember what they are). I am really looking forward to using the Sailsteer functions when racing

Interesting idea. Might want to check to see if your race rules let you use autopilot during a race event.

I have been wondering reading about the integration of all signals to a single display. While in sight of land, having all of the sensors and display information in front of you at one time (or just a click away) feels good, but is it a good idea while sailing out of sight of a nearby harbor. The separation of systems seems to create redundancy of systems. This back up by system, would appear to be a benefit for the cruising sailor.
