Tranny blues

Well actually red.

Hi all,

We have been watching a slight drip of fluid coming from the shaft seal since we began our travels and it didn't fix itself. So why does everyone ask "Did you think it would fix itself?" Or why ask "Did you get any saltwater on it?" I guess if you pay by the hour you have to fill in the time someway. So scroll ahead and tell me "Can you do it?" Then in or out of the water and/or in or out of the boat.

Seems pretty simple if things go right. Has anyone seen that holiday marked on the calendar? We're going to take it out of the boat. Seeing red, yep that's the bank account.

I don't know what tranny you have but many tail seals can be changed in place by just removing the shaft. Once the shaft is out of the way you can remove the seal in a number of ways one being a dent puller, a small slide hammer with a screw tip end. I see a lot of people pry but I think it puts adverse pressure on the seal seat in the tranny. Depending on the setup I could see doing it with the shaft slid back.

I've pulled many seal by putting a sheet metal screw thru the metal of the seal and using a claw hammer

You may want to address the why of this leak. Is your shaft out of alignment? Prop bent or out of balance? Shaft bent? Strut loose or bent?
Same for your Borg Warner Velvet Drive 71/72 series. Have the thrust bearings been compromised? It might be a good time to pull it and have it rebuilt. You can pull it pretty easily and take it to a shop. If memory serves it weighs about 65 kilos so it can be manhandled by a couple of guys and it isn't all that hard to remove, if you have the door from the aft cabin to access the trany. It certainly does NOT take an engineer to remove or replace that trany. A few dollars now might save you big bucks later.

From the title, I thought this post was going to be somehow related to sailing in North Carolina:cowbell:

Good access through the aft cabin. We're thinking 140 lbs. and I'll be there later today to see who the strong weight lifting dock hands will be. Hope they're not in Rio.

Tuesday we got the boat in to the dock and our mechanics got to work. There's always one rusty nut to slow the job down but they soon had it apart and wrestled out of the boat. Mini air bags under the motor would have helped lifting and blocking. Maybe a Mini engine hoist to slide it out of engine room. Can't believe I'd be the first to think of this. However with some extra help they were able to hand it, relay style, out of the boat. The dampener plates were also in need of attention so they got yanked also. Here are the pics.

You do have the Perkins 4.236 don't you? If so, please ask your guys what the trany ratio is. The plate on mine is long gone.

I'll write it down. Our plate had three different paint colors that we had to remove to see it. I know another Pearson 530 owner who had done this and tried a different ratio since he found it locally. Now I'll have to sit at the bar and wait for him to drop in. Finally something I can do that I'm good at. I'll get back to you.

Thanks. A different ratio means a different prop; not the best or cheapest solution, IMO.

All done, found the boat at the dock just as the mechanic was ready to do a sea trial. I hope they write down what all was done. It runs as well as before with no leaking. What will I do with all my free time?

Oh the beauty of a rebuilt transmission!
