Raining here in the Broughtons so I have another question..I have SH GX-1600 vhf. Every so often, i get loud tones about 1sec apart. Push any button they cease. Happens when tuned to any channel. Happens more often in populated places. Cannot find anything in the manual that describes the tones. I turned off DSC alerts etc. I dont use DSC. I turned off everything i could find. They keep happening. Around home, it gets where i just turn the radio off. Is this just someone playing around with the red button? Always no position data....

They were on and now off. However the manual states "a tone" will be heard. Mine are a series of tones about 1 sec on/off time and keeps going. I wonder if Environment Canada does the same thing as I'm currently in BC central islands. At home it happens all to often to be a weather alert....

I have the same radio and the only time I get those on/off tones is when I get a DSC alert or a broadcast DSC test. Otherwise, my radio remains quiet. I wonder if it is something being generated from the Canadian side.

Happened just now. A DSC alert would mean someone is calling me? That should be turned off. WX alerts are now turned off so thats not it and Canadian weather is not broadcasting any alerts. This is really a pain. Someone down the dock yesterday had to find me and tell me some alarm was beeping.....

We didn't get alerts last year, but this summer, the radio (mine's a 2200) has gone off a couple of times.

My radio does not have internal gps but it is hooked to the plotter and displays gps info. Tones happen with plotter on or off. When tones do happen there is no gps data.. But i dont know if the plotter was on at that time. I'll just leave the plotter on and see what happens and see what the display says when it goes off....

It's the Canadian VHF radio version of eh. Bring it to South Carolina. It'll say y'all.

This has been happening to me regularly of late on my SH VHF with GPS. Usually when a big rock is moving right at the port bow as I'm transitioning from motor to sail only power, Ya'll!

Have you had any luck getting advice from the radio manufacturer? Sometimes these new radios have so many features it can be overwhelming.... and frustrating.

I'm in the middle of nowhere so no attemps with mfgr...however, the radio and plotterhave both been on for 2 hrs with no tones. If thats the issue and no way to turn them off, I'm not going to be very happy.....some people use a radio as a radio (without gps input). Should not have to put up with that.

Had radio and plotter on for several hrs. Turned plotter off and tones sounded ~5 min later. Display said no POS data. I always thought someone was playing with the red button with no MMSI programmed in...tones sounded sometime later...At an anchorage, with everything not needed powered down, I'd like to listen to the radio without diving below to silence alarms that i dont give a #^}* about...manual is no help

Maybe turn AIS off on the radio. It sounds like it's an alarm telling you your AIS has no position data.

It is likely warning of the lack of position data for the DSC. It's as simple as the radio would like to know where it is, and since it doesn't have the data, it's asking you to input it. My 2200 does the same thing if I have the radio on without the network.
See if the icon is displayed as in this description from page 20. If not, there's yer problem:

Meriachee, that is the problem. No POS is available and the radio is letting him know that. Page 71 of the user manual for the GX1600 instructs how to enter a manual POS and TIME. This should silence the radio's POS alarm.

Yeah, but the dsc stuff says that it wants fairly regular updates, so it's going to be barking in what, 20 minutes?

Well, today, i got tones 2hrs after plotter shutdown. I just got another set 4 hrs later...these are alarms? Totally useless as alarms. And i should not have to "program" in a set of coordinates to silence an alarm....if thats what these tones really are, then this goes into the category of really stupid....
