I have a Universal Atomic 5411 (1981). It has the duel controls. One for transmission one for throttle and kill. I need to replace the control levers, not the cables. The PO left the boat in bad condition. However I don't really have $1k to blow on a new set of controls from CD. The issue I am having is that the 5411 does not have a kill switch or cable. You have to go past idol in order to kill the engine. Does anyone have a solution to either the replacement controls or a way to kill the engine remotely. The old controls are completely rusted out. Need help asap.

are the control cables not standard Morse cables, 1 for throttle 1 for gear? look at the old cables and see if you can find the serial #s. then call morse and describe what length you need. (do not go shorter on the length, the morse will not operate with a sharp radius of curvature.) last time i replaced my morse cables it was maybe $100 for the cable, and an easy job if you remember to attach the new cable to the old and then pull the old out at engine-side.

How bad is the rust situation? Can you post pics?
It's possible to fully refurbish the components, it just takes a little patience and the right chemicals. As long as the rust isn't so terribly bad that too much metal is gone it remains possible, perhaps some light welding and reinforcement could be the worst. I would hope they were made of stainless steel, but even 304 SS will still rust over time. Worst case, after clening and refurbishment, mild steel can be chromed for additional protection.

I appreciate it cloud diver. The problem is I can not even get the controls off the bulkhead. Any diagrams or ideas? Is there a lock screw at the bottom? I will post pics tomorrow when I go to the boat.

The controls should slide out as a unit if you take all the nuts, screws and clips off from the inside. After they are out I had a bear of a time removing the backing plate/mounting as the inner and outer parts had corroded together.

No fuel cut off. To cut off the 5411 you have to go back from idol which kills the engine.

It is connected to fuel shutoff on top of motor. When looking at motor from front it is middle top left.

My finger is pointing to the bracket the fuel shutoff cable is attached to. Currently in closed position.
