Disposing of an old boat

I live on a ranch. The ranch next door has this sailboat on it. He's offered to give it to me if I'll get it off his place. It's been sitting there since about 1986.
I actually just want the trailer but thought I'd help him out by disposing of the boat.
How do people, get rid of old boats?

(P.S. I have trucks, trailers, and tractors.)
Thanks for the feedback

power wash, a fresh coat of paint, and sell w/o trailer. is that an oday 22?
Others part out the bits, esp pulpits, stanchions, mast and boom, then scrap the keel, and chainsaw the hull. Might be able to sell to a used equip company>

feed it to the pelicans they can digest anything in just a little while .....try donating it to the boat angle or some sea scout group....

Bury it.
Cut the deck off the hull and...
Use the hull for a flower pot.
Bury it half way for a flower bed.
Bury it to the rim for a koi pond.
Bury it all the way.

Chainsaw and a dumpster. I've tried to flatten them out by running them over using backhoes and forklifts did not work well, maybe something with tracks would. You could try reusing the thing might make a good pirate ship in a playground.

a power wash and a price tag of $500 dollars, and be willing to drop the price a couple hundred because it doesnt have a trailer, and it will be gone within the week.... as there are even people who live in the desert, a 1000 miles from any floatable water hole, who are still willing to buy old sailboat to fix up so that they can get some R&R while sailing it on the weekends....

I wonder how well a chain saw would actually work.. I think fiberglass would dull the blade fast.. seems you would be doing a lot of sharpening and replacing chains. The chain saw idea sounds somewhat reasonable for disposing of an old boat but has anyone actually ever done this?

yes, boats and old damaged dock floats, and it works!...
believe it or not, when aluminum truck frames need to be shortened, a regular ol' tree cutting chain saw is the best tool for the job... due to the failed timber industry, they had to be re-purposed, so chainsaws are not just for loggers anymore:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Your local Parks department might like to have it for a playground attraction, and that would sure be a good home for it. If not, then a side grinder with cutoff abrasive wheel works really well to cut fiberglass. wear a good dust mask and goggles ;) . I know a guy who cut up a whole car (Fiero) and disposed of it in his curbside trash over a couple months time.

You live on a ranch. Pull it out to an open area, take the trailer out from under it and strike a match...........

If ALL the fluids have been removed, and you have harvested any part you want, you could use the trailer to take it to the local landfill. They charge by weight. In my area a 2000 lb boat carcass costs less than $50 to get rid of. However, it only weighs that little without an engine and without a keel (which is sold for scrap value). The bulldozers at the landfill make short work of the hull, and it is just pieces when they cover it up.

The ones I've cut apart I've used a sawzall on, but it will use up blades. Chain saws generate more dust than sawzalls, in my opinion, and angle grinders just dont get into places that I have had to get into. However, this can be a LOT of work, and all you are getting out of it is a free trailer.

Consider centerline's idea in post #8. It's a lot less effort, and may put cash in your pocket. Another great alternative is to donate it to Sea Scouts. If it is an active chapter that rehabs boats regularly to fund their racing and organized trips, they will know what it is worth, and will write you a receipt for a charitable donation. If you itemize your deductions, this may be worthwhile, and they would likely come get it (though you would have to make it clear that the trailer is not part of the donation).

I'm not sure why he's so anxious to part with a perfectly beautiful yard ornament.

It was like watching a wreck happen. I watched all four videos. I couldn't stop .

Actually, I have some toys that this gentleman does not have. Lifting it will be much easier for me with the tractor. I also have a "widow maker" chainsaw that is significantly larger than his saws.

The option I like best is to:
•Strip the hardware
•Cut the keel out with a chainsaw
•Toss it on my flatbed with my tractor and •take it to the dump.

Do you guys think there is any value in the mast or boom? Just recycle it? What will it be made of from 1975?
