I suspect it depends on where you live. Ours was $600 and they didn't find much that wasn't already listed on the survey they had done 2 years earlier for the previous owners. I understand insurance surveys are cheaper because it's just to establish an approximate value so they don't look at as many things.

Would that were true all the time! When I had to do a condition and value survey 3 years ago, the surveyor spent quite a bit of time looking at everything while the boat was on the hard (one of the conditions levied by the insurance company).
well I am thinking about having it done still have some things that need repair so believe it will wait until done!
Still didn't answer the fundamental question but it seems you answered your own question regardless by implying you "will wait".
I don't get it why some people ask a vague question, fail to clarify when asked and answer their own question while disregarding how others waste their time trying to help.

why not get the survey done and then you will know exactly what needs to be done to get insurance
Hey illusion sorry if you think I am waisting people's time! I am a new owner with very little experience with a sailboat I ask ? for the simple fact I love and appreciate the knowledge of experienced owners !!!!!

Having said that, it is sometimes frustrating to answer questions when the OP ignores salient points so hopefully we both learned something from this. I certainly have.
The reason why we ask about the purpose for the survey is because it is an intrisical part of the survey. A survey for a prospective purchase may point out maintenance issues that would be of no interest to an insurance company. However most surveyor have a standard scope examination that could serve both. Surveys are date sensitive, in a few month a survey conducted today will likely be useless as most insurance companies and buyers will require a more recent one conducted by someone they trust. If what you are looking for is more of a medical check to have a list of things that should be done I would say forget about a surveyor and engage someone familiar with sailboats to perform a walk through and make up a list of observations. Why pay for a specialist MD when a nurse can help you out. Think of a survey as an official report to be relied upon by people in financial matters. No report needed, just find a knowledgeable sailor friend to check your boat out while you guys have a beer or two and get pointers.
An interesting scenario transpired up here last year, the insurance company requested a survey for continued coverage. One of the candidates has a website that suggests that they have a bunch of accreditations. I asked a number of questions that led me to understand that the local representative did not hold any accreditation at all beyond a "marine technical" certificate from a local technical institute.
The suggested price range was three times the average from a number of guys in Vancouver. When I spoke to the individual about it, he was quite defensive, stating that he had done "hundreds" of local surveys and the company held the certs.
The candidates I spoke to at the coast, without exception, left a positive impression of their capabilities, were happy to share samples and lists of what would be done.

We all are different in ways but my thought's have always"s been to respect everyone no matter what they know or don't
The reply you got was right there are two kinds of survey,s insurance and purchace. the latter being more expensive. but usaully they charge by the foot for boats, I would call around or ask a couple of people at marinas. the fellow that did my boat when I purchased it was about 370.00 us. but he did miss things that I spotted later. but most important is having it hauled out to look at the hull most other things are very basic. happy sailing everybody
