An interesting scenario transpired up here last year, the insurance company requested a survey for continued coverage. One of the candidates has a website that suggests that they have a bunch of accreditations. I asked a number of questions that led me to understand that the local representative did not hold any accreditation at all beyond a "marine technical" certificate from a local technical institute.
The suggested price range was three times the average from a number of guys in Vancouver. When I spoke to the individual about it, he was quite defensive, stating that he had done "hundreds" of local surveys and the company held the certs.
The candidates I spoke to at the coast, without exception, left a positive impression of their capabilities, were happy to share samples and lists of what would be done.
