I looked at a 1996 Hunter 376 for purchase yesterday and discovered that while it has the standard refrigerator and icebox, it has no refrigeration system (compressor, evaporator, etc.) Can anyone provide information on what the "standard" installation includes ie. model numbers of compressor, condenser, evaporator, etc. In addition, what is the location of the condensing unit on this boat. Thanks!

The specs indicate it has a top loader, Adler Barbour 12V Super Cold Machine refrigeration system for refrigerator and freezer. It does not indicate wether they utilize the CU 100 Air Cooled or the CU 200 Air/Water Cooled (preferred for the tropics)unit. Both rated for 15 cubic feet box. They utilize Danfoss compressors probably the BD50F. Knowing Hunter's affinity for cost savings I would make an educated guess that they chose the CU 100 Air Cooled.

Thanks very much, Benny. Do you know if there is a separate system for the freezer or are there just two "cold plates?" Also, do you know the model # of the compressor/condensor unit and its typical location in this boat? Any info you can provide is appreciated.

Based on what is in my 2002 H410, I think you will find that you put the cold plate in the freezer and install a spillover fan to bring cold air into the Fridge. I also have a small hole in the bottom of the wall between the freezer and fridge with a plastic swiveling cover to allow a little or a lot of cold air flow (and water drain when defrosting) into the fridge where the drain plug is.

Thanks Mulf. Sounds like the way to go. I also have a hole in the partition between the refrigerator and the freezer. I'm sure it's for the purpose you indicated. Thanks so much for your reply. I put a contract on the boat today tand it was accepted. Now we'll see how the survey goes...

Under the U shaped seat that is around the table, at the aft side of the table (close to the galley sink). Put in a ventilation grill of about a square foot, in the side of the fiberglas seat assembly, where the condensing unit is located.

Thanks Allan. I think the location you described is where the air conditioner condenser/compressor is located on this boat. Any other place it could be mounted?

Mine is near the AC but outboard of it (closer to the hull, near the bottom of the U). It can be placed under the seat at the bottom of the U. There is plenty of room there and the exact location is not critical. Ventilation is critical. I even put a computer type fan in the fiberglas, blowing toward the table. It gets warm under the seat and active ventilation improves efficiency.

Sounds good. I believe there is additional space under the salon as you describe. Is your evaporator/cold plate in the fridge or the smaller icebox and what is its shape? Your help greatly appreciated.

It is in the freezer compartment. Visualize a box of about 1 cubic feet with the bottom plastic and the four sides are the cold plate. It is located on the forward side of the compartment near the top of the compartment. A fan between the refrig and freezer compartments sends cold air thru an ~3 inch hole into the refrig compartment.

Thanks, Allan. That all makes sense. Can you put an ice tray in the box as you describe?

Maybe, I never tried. I'm not at the boat so I can't get a measurement. You can probably cut short to fit a standard plastic ice cube tray.

Ok, thanks. By the way, did your 376 come with the refrigerator/icebox configuration you've described?

OK, thanks to all who replied. Your help appreciated. One last item: Anyone know where to acquire used components for the refrigeration system?

My 376 has the cold machine installed under the U settee. It is the air cooled / water cooled version with the sea water pick up thru hull located in the keel sump area with a strainer. It discharges via a thru hull outboard of the compressor unit. The cold plate installs in the freezer section with a T-stat there. There is also a small fan installed at that hole between the refrigerator and freezer compartment. It is controlled by a second thermostat in the refrigerator section. In very warm weather you may find that you need to close up the refrigerator drain hole. I use a baggy filled with water....easy to remove.

Mine and a friend's boat has the CU 200 Air/Water Cooled. You can put any unit you want into the boat and since yours doesn't have one, I would recommend the one where it has a bronze block you bolt to the hull on the outside. This is an air/water cooled unit but it doesn't require a pump or filters. I have so much trouble with mine I may change over someday. Sorry but I don't have a link or name for it as it's been a couple years since I researched it.
