hi there I was wondering how much rake should there be on the mast of my venture 224 ive been doing alot of work to her and i was getting ready to raise the stick . need to get an accurate measurement so I can get a new forestay made and it seems to be quite a bit of rake .sidestays are tight and aftstay is still really loose .probably atleast 10 to 20 degrees to the aft. thanks steve stewart.

You may wish to make adjustments to optimize balance but 2 degrees aft is a good place to start.

Bud is correct... somewhere around 2 degrees or 2-4 inches rake is a good starting point.... then sail it in a 10-12mph wind and if the boat has much pressure pulling on the tiller with the boat wanting to round up into the wind, then remove some of the rake.... if the boat wants to turn down away from the wind, you need more rake... the tiller should almost float in your hand in 10kt winds, but in a gusts it should want to round up a little bit.... but rounding up is always better that rounding down.

a lot of this depends on how the boat is loaded, so the rigging trim should be set on the boat after you get it loaded how you are going to keep it loaded...

thank you another thing under the mast step there is a 3/4 inch piece of wood between the step and the cabin top is this stock or was this added later. Could this be the reason Ive got so much rake . thanks for the input. Steve Stewart

It was added later, most likely.

the plywood probably is the reason.... is the cabintop dished in that spot or any signs of other damage?... the tabernacle could have been pulled out and covering it over may have been the fix.
That is not necessarily the proper fix when trying to keep things as close to original as possible, but it is the easiest and can be acceptable if done with some care.

and when it is done that way, the mast needs to be cut off, OR, longer rigging, (especially shrouds) may need to be made.... and then the original rigging specs for the boat can be given the "float test" , because they wont be valid anymore...
the headstay may be extended with a johnson lever or a longer turnbuckle, and the same with the backstay

it is NOT desirable for the backstay to be tight, except in special circumstances for racing. slightly snug is reasonable.

The cabin top is in good shape has the same radius all the way across .Ill remove it and try again .it also appears that the old bolt holes were filled in and everything was moved foward about 2 inches i,ll put it all back where it was .Thanks for the input Steve.
