Fine adjustment of trans shifter lever

I have recently bought a Pearson 28-2 with a Yanmar YGM20 engine. It has had both the shifter and throttle cables replaced but I think the transmission one could use some fine adjusting.
What I noticed is that there is sometimes a delay in engaging when the trans go from forward to reverse or vice versa. Upon closer examination I noticed that when I put the shifter all the way forward it does not fully extend the lever on the transmission. To test I put the trans into drive from the cockpit control lever. Next I loosened the screw on the end of the trans cable, then I was able to further move the shifter lever on the transmission. It seems like the is just a little bit of control range of the over movement from forward/reverse.
Attached you will see an image of the transmission lever and what appears to be a offset cam.
My question is this for micro adjustment ? and if so how is the best way to adjust so that I increase the range of movement ?

Thanks

its kind of hard to tell from your pic ...but is that red connection on the shifter arm flat on the back side ...if so try turning it over 180 degrees so the flat is next to the shift lever on the gear box it looks like it is binding of the lever ...oh and you should always set these cables starting from the neutral position on both the gear box and the sift lever at the pedestal and work for that point...there may be more to come from others on this

Thats a great idea to try Woodster and will be my mission tomorrow. I don't believe it is binding but worth a shot. attached is a view from an alternative angle.
Starting with everything in neutral makes sense and would just like to know more about the offset screw or shaft the lever sits on coming out of the trans

I'm not a Yanmar guy, but I think both your way and Woody's way would have issues long term. Either way, it seems there is a lot of metal rubbing together. I would think there would be some rotatable sleeve on the shifter bolt where the cable attaches. Have you called up Yanmar's drawing and compared? It doesn't seem like this would be factory....

you may be able to swap the red fitting to the other side of the shift lever on the gearbox and and get a better path for the cable ...i don't recognize that red fitting but it may be something new as morse has changed hands 2 or 3 times in the past few years and may be something new

That is not a factory linkage. Like Mark suggests compare the shifter arm to a factory one and you may find your problem.

you may be right on Mark but there has been a lot of fixing over the years and nothing surprises me when it comes to cable fixings

I would think the easy swivel mechanism resides in that red fitting. It looks like the cable is touching up to the inner nut holding the fixture. Cannot tell if it is a moving part but if it is not then it could be restricting the movement of the red fixture.

I do not have a parts manual for a YGM20, but my 1GM has a spring-loaded connector assembly that goes between the end of the cable and the transmission level. I believe that it is also used on the 2GM and the 3GM. The part number is 177088-06090. I think that your shifting problem will be solved by this part.

Could the engine by a 2GM20? If so, this is what you definitely need. The part number is 177088-06090

Good luck! Let us know how it works out. Please do double-check the part number with your Yanmar dealer. I have found that sometimes the part numbers change from what is in my book.
