"I did use SS nuts/bolts."

You should have used the nylon bolts that come with the compass. Stainless can be an issue if even slightly magnetic that close to a compass.

Your compass should already have compensators. I haven't seen a proper marine compass without them.
Look for a small access with small slot screws inside. You may need to remove a cover to see them.

I thought it always came without compensators, at least when I bought mine a few years ago. According to the Plastimo website they are now optional.

They are not necessary though. Swing the compass and create a deviation card for your boat and keep it handy when plotting a course.
