Hi,
I have a 1993 Hunter 27 with a Yanmar 1GM10 inboard diesel. It was starting and running fine and then the impeller went out. I think I opened a fuel line while changing the impeller and got air in the system. I've since purged the fuel lines and I'm getting fuel to the fuel filter and the cylinder. Still wont start. Turns over fine but no fire. Any thoughts or tips? Thanks your your help.

Might try bleeding it all the way at every post then give it a shot of ether (starting fluid ) I have a 2gm with similar problem also check your filters

There is a bleeder at the fuel injection pump which is further upstream from the bleeder at the fuel filter. You may need to bleed the fuel injection pump, too.

I had this problem too. It turned out I had a "Senior Moment" and didn't have my decompression lever set. ;)

Is a 2gm 20 not supposed to start when the decompression levers are depressed after changing my oil this spring I flipped leavers to build oil pressure and the motor fires right up I guess I'd half to hold leaver open to stop that

Yes, like Scott indicates it is likely that you also need to bleed the injector pump. If you have done that and still the engine will not fire up then I would be curious as to why you were replacing the impeller. If it was due to the engine having badly overheated you could have damaged the head gasket thus experiencing a loss of compression. If the fuel lines are bled of air and compression is fine then check the quality of the fuel. Old deteriorated fuel or too much water in the fuel can be the culprit. Check and see if you have a water separator and drain or replace the filter as well as the secondary fuel filter for good measure.

When you removed the fuel line from the top of the injector, did fuel come out when turning over the engine?

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try them when I make it back to the boat this weekend. The impeller was toast but the motor didn't run too long before I discovered that. I'll post the outcome (hopefully good) on Monday

Just to clarify; the decompression lever should be flipped to the "up" position to start and run, right?

Mine starts with the decompression lever down. It decompresses when pulled up and stops the engine. I'm not sure how yours is setup since I have a ysm12.

Decompression lever is meant to let it turn over easier that"s all should start either way, but you should leave it closed when running . Listen to how it turns over ya can hear the differance

???? Mine will not start decompressed. That's why the engine stops when I activate the decompression lever. If it stops the engine then how would it start? ;)

Coul'nt tell ya but know it is meant for starting purpose! Sure if already running it would stall lack of compression!

I'm not a diesel mechanic but the only time I decompress the engine when starting is when I am hand cranking it manually to get some rotation going before I de-activate the lever to fire it up (I have a single cylinder)

It will not start or run with decompression lever pulled.

True! The reason it is there is to start it turning over get parts moving, then return it to full compression without full compression WILL NOT RUN

Yes that is correct. If you don't believe look in the Yanmar manual.

Got it started on Friday. I'm not sure what did it. I purged all the lines again so I'm guessing there was still air in the fuel system somewhere. I may not have been letting the glow plugs warm up enough either. Thanks for all the advice.

The 1GM10 doesn't have a glow plug.
