Unless you have actually achieved the rank of Captain then calling yourself one is an exercise in ego and compensation for other short comings..... More discussion here than on the TV reception thread.... and more on both than anything truly sailing related. Which is just......

No question it would be Mary Ann for my taste... I believe she was a beauty hidden under those island rags and remember as a kid dreaming of her.
Ginger's personality just didn't cut it for me in the show. ;)

The initial sea time requirement goes back to 15 years of age and is cumulative over your lifetime assuming you can document your time.
This is true, but 90 days of your qualifying time must be in the past 360 days.

Spent the first 21 years of my business career in the advertising agency business. We actually used Mary Ann in a commercial years ago. She was delightful to work with. And still looked pretty good quite a few years after her Gilligan days.

So....cb32863 should we refer to you as Captain Long Dong Silver, or are you just a confused Quarter Master. Keep the crew under control...else discover what the definition of mutiny entitles the subordinates to perform. Don't any of you all watch "Black Sails"...Best show on Cable, the history is dramatic and fairly accurate historically. Arrrrrggggghhhh! You just have to be a brave soul to be Captain, and yeah you'll probably get killed.

To be fair...here's Tina Louise in the same time frame:
I'd be honored for either one to be part of my crew...for a three hour tour!

I'm pretty sure my wife considers me the captain and I refer to her as my First Mate. In reality I consider myself the skipper since the person who takes ultimate responsibility is the skipper. My understanding is the Captain of a Naval vessel takes absolute responsibility of his vessel even when he defers to the Admiral's wishes/orders. So in effect my First Mate is actually my Admiral.

In the marine industry the term Captain is a courtesy, the more technical term is master ,my license says command endorsment for a ship's master.

And then when Jimmy Buffet talks about Florida, he mentions "Condo Captains"... Goes along with "Cottage Captain" when I'm at Bethany Beach. Maybe it all boils down to who is paying the bills gets the naming rights?
