Every time I turn around it is something else that I have to get to finish a damn project. Just when you think you have the pieces you end up having to get one more thing to finish it.

On Monday I planned to finish my VHF project. Well, as it turns out, I got the correct terminals but I didn't get the reducers I needed for this. The reason being was the difference of one tiny little X. I bought the connectors for RG8. Not realizing it but if you have RG8X you need the reducers. I just ordered the reducers so there is another day of working on the boat where I won't finish this project.

How many times does this happen to you? You are just about to finish a project and, darn it, you have to run to the store to get one more screw or bolt. Or, even worse, you have to order a darn part and it takes a week or two to get there.

I have so many other projects to do I will go right up to the point of installing the terminals with the VHF project and then I will work on some other projects. Still, I really want to finish this project because it has been a long and on-going one. Darn it!!!!!!!

Well, the good news is that I have plenty more to do:

Pressure wash the bottom of the boat and touch up bottom paint
Fiberglass a small area of damage on the dingy
Paint the dingy
Make an extension for the windex so it will clear the new VHF antenna that was never there before
Figure out why one of my cabin lights isn't working
Fit my new sheets to the V berth
Remove my rudder and drill it out to put the bushings in it
Paint the rudder housing
Finish the mast rewiring by installing the plug at the end of the mast wires
Clean the boat
Wax the hull
Sand and refinish exterior wood work

You know what I noticed?

That "one last thing" takes the longest time to finish!:confused:

I have managed to finish some of my projects, but not without multiple return trips to BOW/WestMarine/HomeDepot/Lowes/HarborFreight. I think I spend more time in stores than on the boat for any completed project.

The two things I spend 90% of my Project time on is:
1. Going to the store for One More Bolt (or screw, or fitting, or tool, or...)
2. Looking for things (usually tools)

I spend most of my project time trying to fish out that one little OEM screw I dropped behind a nest of wires, behind the drawer, under the engine...or any otherwise inaccessible space:banghead:

Speaking for boat owners everywhere, we plan to be finished with the project as soon as we sell the boat.... it may be several years yet.

There really is no such thing as a simple, single, quick and easy boat project.... its just one long drawn out series of events that run concurrently from one into another.... sometimes we put our tools away and clean up the mess, but its not because the job is done, but only because its time for the next phase of the job to begin....

Most projects can be completed without going back to the store after the original trip, but afterwards I usually have to resupply my spares stores. Once in a while a project can be completely done with what's aboard. That is incredibly satisfying, but somehow the spares stores still never seem to shrink.

Ever try buying 16 gauge X 1 1/4 in. brass nails that are necessary to finish the last teak trim install?
Or a 3/8 reverse thread, stainless nut to secure a pellican hook on a lifeline?
Go ahead, go to every imaginable store and the interweb. Be my guest.:evil:

Today, I said "To Hell with the projects", I am going sailing. We hadn't taken the boat out in awhile. It was a beautiful day; nice & sunny, 72 degrees, South winds 10-15. We came back to the dock and I told the Admiral that it was indeed a great day, nice sail, no one fell overboard, nothing broke, everything worked as expected. After tying up and reconnecting the power, I was closing up and switched the boat's main AC breaker on and then it happened---reverse polarity?? Turned off the shore power & rechecked the shore power connections. Turned everything back on; same thing again, reverse polarity???
So, I turned the dock power pedestal off and shut everything off inside the boat. Go figure, just cant get a break! Add one more project to the list! Will return tomorrow to trouble shoot------ or maybe not, same weather forecast tomorrow.

I was going out too, but alas, WORK:mad:

PS: I had that happen and a new boat burnt my box/cord.

Hey Bad

I'm about to start this same project. My radio arrived in the mail Friday. The only thing I have left to acquire is the coaxial, connectors and through-deck splice. Any part numbers you could share would be greatly appreciated.

just had one of those moments ....went up the mast to change the deck light ...came down ....turned on the light ....not working ...so load the mast climber up one more time and go back up:banghead:....hind site is a smart old man ....woody next time go up with the light switch turned on :redface:

Not sure if you are still needing the left hand thread nut or just making a point. Here is the nut from CsJohnson. I had just been through their catalog a few days ago looking for life line parts. http://www.csjohnson.com/marinecatalog/00012.htm
