Its time to upgrade the old VHF radio with the new type DSC and since my helm and radio are in two different locations I am thinking of getting the Standard Horizon GX 1700 that has GPS that way I don't have to run a wire from my Garmin to my radio. I am a little concerned since my radio is down below in the cockpit. I don't want top have to put in a separate antenna. Anyone have experience with this unit?

Does it not accept the SH Ram mic that can be hardwired to the cockpit?. I have the older GX2150 that I will mount below but also have the Ram remote mic for the helm.

The 1700 will accept the remote mike and that will give me a future upgrade. Thanks

I have the 1700 mounted in the cabin of my Catalina 30. The internal antenna for GPS works fine, so no additional antenna in required for GPS. (But the VHF is connected to a mast mounted antenna.)
I also have the SH RAM mic mounted near the wheel. This works very well and is very convenient.
Have had both for about 1 1/2 years and have had no problems with any of the components.

D. I had the same question when I installed a SH chartplotter in my navpod. Will there be enough GPS signal to penetrate the plastic shell of the pod? I believe I got the answer on this forum. And it does work fine. I would try the location using your (or anyone else's) handheld GPS in the proposed location of your VHF/GPS and see if you get good signal. That would be a good start.

If you're getting a new VHF anyway, why not go for the 2200 and get AIS also? As mentioned, you can get the remote mike that also has the AIS display on it.

I have the S.H. 1700. Installed it 2 years ago and it works well. I needed a new radio and the GPS/MMSI feature was important without the separate GPS/radio interface. The radio is in the cabin with an aluminum tank almost directly overhead. The VHF GPS tracks us just fine without the external antenna. I have three other GPS sources to compare it to and the differences are basically non existent.
The Ram mic would put control outside for you. You might also consider the AIS if desired. Other wise I have found the 1700 to be a good radio. I think I would get a separate AIS as those screens are small unless you can/want to tie the AIS function to a larger screem.
Only thing I might add further is consider the external speaker. Like all built in speakers they are not great. The Ram may help but don't know.
