Furling Asym - budgetary cost?

jackdaw, just bought a doyle asym, haven't used it yet. I can't visualize how the ''tacker'' will work when you gibe.
You do 'outside' gibes, where the lazy sheet runs around outside the sail and the forestay. To gibe you give a big ease on the active sheet so the sail flies like a flag (more or less, that never really happens!) in front of the boat while DDW... you then take up on the lazy (now active) sheet as you turn up onto the new side.

Does the ''tacker'' rotate around the furled head sail?
It's already in front, so no, it doesn't rotate. The tack of the sail is in front of the furled sail, and the "loop" part is at the back. the pull will be off centre, but not to the degree where you get a full rotation.

Thanks for the replies. The you could photo threw me off with tacker facing aft. I thought maybe you gibe on the inside of the forestay'

Looking at the picture up above, it appears the way the furler is angled that the tack is inboard. Bzzzt. The sleeve of the tacker holds the sail to the furler, but the wind and load on the sail will dictate where the tack is. The question about rotation is not easy to answer without some confusion. Yes it does rotate, just not the way you're thinking, if that makes sense. It'll probably rotate maybe as much as 90 degrees, as the wind pulls the sail to the other side.

Very nice. Once you fly the kite with a sprit, you'll never go back.

That's a lot of work. The furler is a way better idea.

Probably will require tacking outside - let the asym fly out in front of the forestay. That's how I gybe my asym, because there's no sprit for any kind of distance between spin luff and tack, and forestay.

Oh, wow, based on that ATN video, they gybe inside, between the luff and the forestay. Hm.

This Youtube vid shows how to jibe and use the tacker.
If someone comes on my boat and blows the tack on a kite like that I'll throw them in the water.

Personally I think that vid contains more bad ideas than good ones.

joker460; Why run the lazy sheet inside the sail and not outside ?
Hey, Don't shoot the messenger.:yikes: All I did was show a video of what Brian S was requesting. A picture is worth a thousand words. It's not my video.

I know some of this is personal preference, but is it safe to say for boats with sprits, gybe the asym inside, between the luff and the forestay, and for boats without a sprit (or very small gap between the tack/luff and the forestay) to gybe outside the luff (with lazy sheet forward of the asym tack?)

Even with a sprit, an inside gybe presents way more wrap opportunity.
