Will look for it. I DO have your promise that it does control the temp right? LOL

The new Magmas are not like the older ones - that seems to be where the confusion comes from.
Our Magma can be turned down extremely low or be extremely hot. Works perfect in the wind and not much flare up. Bonus is that you can use it as a stove and cook messy bacon on it with the lid down - mess.
I've had other grills - the Magma (newer model) is worth every penny.

Two options are either a charcoal magna or a low cost propane. The propane magna sucks and I don't use that verb often. With the lid open,a steak will never cook. With the closed it will be toast in five minutes. Same effect as tossing it dirtectly on red hot coals, black shoe leather on the outside ,raw on the inside. I don't know how they have the nerve to charge so much for such a piece of crap, and I don't use that noun often. Burgers just burst into flames while hot dogs become dust.
I look forward to deep sixing mine as soon as I find a safe mounting method for wonderful easy to control big box store grill. I use my weber grill year round and that baby can be fine tuned to a single degree.
I love to grill but the propane magna takes all the joy out of it.

Your post makes me wonder if it is the old style? (No hinged lid and lava rocks inside) If so, that's what our original one was. I let it go with the boat and use the newer one (Way better) When we bought our current boat, it also had the old style. I swapped them to keep our newer one and have been glad I did. Still I agree they don't work as well as our Webber we have at home, but then again it's also way smaller.

Hi Ken,
It's the new hinge model two years old. As others have posted, it gets way too hot for us gormett cooks. My 20 dollar weber smokey joe is alot easier to use, then again my 400 dollar 20 year old weber geneis is too. But neither of them mount on my sternrail.

I disagree so strongly, I'm actually baffled by your post. There must be something wrong with your grill, or (no offense) you don't know how to use it properly. I can grill you whatever you want on my Magma, from hot dogs to filet mignon, cooked however you like, and you won't know it didn't come from Ruth's Chris, or the Four Seasons.

And I can do it in 20 knot winds.

We just CAN'T be talking about the same grill!!
I agree....
BUT... magma offers 3 different propane regulators for their grills, for those people that have different cooking styles.... different gas flow rates, so this could be the problem. Magma Regulators
I have two different regulators, because we do a lot of grilling of vegetables (in a grilling basket) directly over the flames, and the one regulator wasnt hot enough to grill them fast enough, so I bought a high output reg, but for cooking thick meat its a bit too hot and so I need to use the smaller one.
when cooking crab on the boat, I thought the big regulator would be great to get the water boiling quick, and it does!... but the problem is it cant be turned down low enough to keep the water from boiling over and dousing the flame.... again, the smaller regulator is better.
but with the hot regulator, it only take about 5 minutes to grill up the veggies, even on a cool and windy day...

to the OP... I wish I could recommend a more affordable grill to get you by, but the problem is that most "affordable" grills are not wind proof, and they will blow out easily, and there isnt much use in a grill that blows out in the slightest breeze. the new magma kettle II grill will remain lit in a pretty strong blow and as all parts of it are made of good quality stainless, it is very low maintenance and will last a long time.
the magma kettle II can be used as a single burner stove, a grill or an oven... (my wife baked a cake in ours and it came out perfect) and I strongly recommend it... the grill I mean, leave my cake alone!

I also wanted a cheap alternative so I decided to look and see what Walmart had. I found a Better Homes and Garden (BHG) stainless steel portable grill at our local Walmart for regular $70.00 on sale for $35.00 Needless to say I had to try it. I took the legs off and used some Magma rail mounts I got from a friend and mounted it on the stern rail. I also made a cover for it. (sorry I don't have pic without the cover on it) I have only used it a few times but so far it seems to work great. I have not tried to cook while under sail and doubt if we will ever. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Better-Homes-and-Gardens-Premium-Portable-Gas-Grill/47423124

Wow, it sounds like you got a lemon. I wonder if you could borrow someone's regulator and see if that would improve things.

I actually have two rail-mount grills - but have never mounted them on my H410. I have found that I've never had a problem using the grills available at marinas - and my Kuomo has legson it if I need to set up on a picnic table. So - no need to grill ON the rail! Capt Bill on STARGAZER

I used a rail flag pole to serve as brace. two rail clamps and made a table. I then bolted the store grill to table and covered with sunbrella. mostly cook at dockside so no waves to deal with.

My grill was also hot. I complained to Magma and they said I needed the low output regulator. For some reason they use the same one for all the grills, big or small. For $30+ it solved the extreme heat problem.

If you are going to buy the Magma make sure it is the KETTLE 2 version. There is a 15" and a 17". I find the 17 doesn't give you that much more cooking room for the price.

So Magma knowingly ships all their units with the wrong regulator knowing that many of their customers will eventually get so fed up they will be forced to spend time researching the cause and then they charge another $30++ to fix what they could have fixed before it left the factory. What great customer service! :banghead:

Jeez, Larry, really? You're starting to come off as a tad hysterical, my friend. The grill in question gets four stars at West Marine, four and a half stars at Amazon. Not bad, considering those dirty rotten scoundrels at Magma are deliberately sending out every single unit with the "wrong" regulator, wouldn't you say? ;)

I guess I need to buy a Magma grill. I've never owned a grill that got too hot for me. I BBQ with the lid down and shoot for 450* minimum when cooking a steak. I haven't turned one into charcoal in many years and prefer them just pink in the middle 1/3. ummmm. I'm getting hungry ;) .

Post 6 says with the BBQ on the stern rail, it was in the way of sailing. Almost sounds like it was mounted INSIDE the rail, not outside?
.
No, not inside the rail, but on top of the rear stern rail, almost directly behind the helm. So when I leaned back or stretched my arm on the rear rail, it was in the way.

I don't use it a lot, so don't mind setting it in the brackets when I want to grill, and stowing it when I am sailing.
