I have a 1999 Hunter 380 with a 3JH2E yanmar diesel engine with a 2" exhaust pipe. I have to change the mixing elbow but the two alternatives in market have:
129470-13541 elbow has a 3" exhaust pipe exit.
129470-13550 elbow has a 2.5" exhaust pipe exit.
Has anybody experienced the same problem and how did you solve it?

When it comes to exhaust (and battery cables too for that matter) the bigger the better. So even though we do not know the lengths involved you might consider 2.5 all the way from the mixing elbow to the outfall overboard fitting.

Thanks. But not much can be done. Te rest of the exhaust system is 2". So somewhere along the exhaust line I will have to reduce. Thanks anyway.

OK - Yanmar will provide you advice similar to what I have already said. But - probably better you should consult with Yammar on diameter vs. length than to rely on me (or whatever your builder had already installed.) Either way if you do not want to consult with them then one cannot offer much help . . . but one wishes you the best of luck.

Not familiar with that engine, Raul.. The key is whether the elbow from the 3GM series will fit .. From the looks of it, the mixing elbow is rusted tightly to the "lower elbow" and all three parts (the lower elbow, the nipple, and the mixing elbow) will eventually have to be replaced if the mixing ell can't be freed up.. Might be best to remove the assembly from the engine and take it to someone familiar with the GM engine to see if the parts are the same size.. The determining point would be the threads in the lower elbow.. if they are 1.5" left hand in the mixing elbow and 1.5" right hand in the lower elbow, then this part from the GM (which has a 2" hose barb for the exhaust hose) would be the ticket. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yanmar-Stai...ash=item4d3184af72:g:pbAAAOSwaNBUed8C&vxp=mtr
Check out this post from Island Packet Owners.. he says that the 129198-13500 as on the original does have a 2" hose connection ..

From the looks of the mixing elbo where they join together at the double nipple
you should change ASAP.
My mixing elbo looked real good and was running real good but the double threaded
nipple was badly rusted just like yours looks and was motoring at about 5 knots out into
the harbor here and getting ready to put up the sails when bang all this noise and smoke
appeared and after popping the engine cover also saw all the water coming in.
The mixing elbo pulled apart at the double threaded joint on the flange part bolted to the engine and long story short got towed back to my dock and got a new mixing elbo from Yanmar at $155 with the new stainless double threaded joint.
I have a 2007 3YM30

I noticed when I replaced my mixing elbow a few years ago that the inside of the exhaust section (outlet) was internally threaded. Check to see if that is the case with the 2.5 in version you are looking at. If so, you could thread a pipe nipple into it serving as your reducer that the rubber hose could clamp to. Good luck.

Just unbolt from engine and bring to you local dealer and have them replace what is there. Odds are you will not be able to separate elbow and by looks a complete replacement from engine to hose would be recommended..... 3 pieces.

When living I had friends who had big bench vise and big plumbers wrench
and I could take the 2 pieces apart and they have a reverse thread.
But when I changed my rusted threaded nipple it was so badly rusted I used
a saws all and made many cuts into the thread up to where the flange part that is
the part to the engine and than with chisel hammer pushed in the sides until it was so loose
it came out,I did this with out damage to the flange threads that is the part bolted to the back of engine.
But still need a big strong bench vise and plumbers wrench to put the new and old together and lucked out again with help of a friends tools or I did once bring it to a marine repair shop and they did it for me $25.00

Raul: surprised there isn't a Yanmar dealer in the area. anyhow, what marina do you keep her in? You are in one of the best sailing areas in the Pacific. But, you already know that...

Might not be good idea to go smaller,a friend of mine has been over heating because
his exhaust size was smaller when some changed it.
As soon as he increases rpm's to increase speed it over heats but is OK if he stays at about 5 knots.

The boat is at Marina Vallarta. There is a supposed authorized dealer there "Zaragoza Marine" and has no idea of the needed parts. Hes asking me for the part numbers, and asumes no responsability in case the part numbers are not correct. Any way by now I know the parts I have to buy.
