Compression post I-Beam

Getting ready to replace the I-Beam on my '77 h30 next month. Have searched the archives but have come up short. To anyone who has done this, how was it done? Maybe someone can direct me to a previous post or site that I have missed. The yard where I am having this done is also researching this. I hope. I'm also hoping I don't have to take the rig down. Any and all advice is very much welcomed. Thanks.

You are probably going to have to take the mast down for safety. You will probably need a Crane to do it as well. Shop around at marinas to see what the price would be.

The mast will be way too heavy for you to do the work. You will need the rig down to take the pressure off of the compression post.

While the mast is down you may want to rewire it and check all the rigging up top. It would also be a good time to run new halyards and replace the anchor light.

Thanks for the input. Still researching.. Was hoping that someone who has done this would chime in. Hate to keep reinventing the wheel. Mast was taken down in '01, rewired, new lights, deck under mast cored out and rebuilt, compression post beefed up. Why we didn't tackle the I-beam at the same time mystifies me. The yard seems to feel that we can shore up the mast while we replace the I-Beam. If the mast does have to come down it will be time to replace lights with LEDs. Keep the posts coming. Any and all advice most welcomed. When I do haul next month will post on progress, hopefully with pics

I have that anchor light by Davis Industries. I like it a lot. It is LED, has very low draw, and has a day/night sensor. When I start a trip I turn it on and I can leave it on for the whole trip (unless I sail at night which is extremely rare). Great light!

Hey B.O., did you put your own LED bulb in or does it come with one? The description doesn't mention LED. I am wanting to replace my masthead light with an LED too.

You should find a post on point in the thread on the Cherubini forum archives with a title something like "replace mast step in 30 minutes".
Type in "mast step" in that forum and look at the list carefully... It's there somewhere and seems to me it is the easiest way to do the job.

I believe that it is an LED light. If not, the same light does come with an LED bulb. Look up Davis Industries LED Anchor light.

If you decide to do the work spar up, loosen all the standing rigging and pull you boom. Left to itself, your mast is probably around 125 pounds. Depending on the mast section, that's about 3 pounds per foot. Pretty easy to support or jack the deck up 1/2 inch to fit the new wide flange.
