I plan to replace my aged topping lift line with one I can lead back to the cockpit. The filament is frayed and needs replacing also. The manual says you can substitute mono fishing line if you don't want to buy from Doyle. What have you all used? Is there a good source for the filament? Any input on the size of the topping line? I don't find it in the manual and I'm not good at guessing. I just want the clamps for the filament to still grab well. My topping lift adjusts and cleats at the mast, not the boom. Thanks!

Just take the line (mono) to a tackle supply shop and match it up with what they have get the uv protected kind
As for the topping lift get the same size as your Maine halyard and the same type .....can't ever have enough halyards

Thanks Woodster. This is Kansas, we don't have any big game fishing :) I will check and see what they have. I clipped a piece off of mine.
You don't think the main halyard line is too thick for the Dutchman clamps?

Thanks Ted. This version is better than mine. It looks like I have what should be an A system but is not. A line that attaches at the boom and adjusts at the mast. According to the manual though. there should be an attachment fitting near the top and the bitter end at the base should be long enough to lower it and allow for disconnecting the 'pennant' with the Dutchman when you remove the mainsail..
Looks like the line should be 3/16" and the filament: 300-400 lb. test

Thanks guys!!

Just contact Dutchman for the filament. I have found them to be reasonable in price, and then you know that you have the right stuff.

Rich, I'll ask them for a quote. Sometimes shipping costs more than parts! I like to support local business too.

I used weed whacker filament on mine. I don't know if you can get round ww line anymore.

oops i didn't even think about it clipping the the topping lift but it would be very strong that way not that it really needs to be that strong

I followed your advice and ordered from Dutchmar. It was as I expected, shipping was almost as much as the line. On to replace the topping lift. I want it long enough to lead it back to the cockpit and be able to lower it enough to disconnect the filament from the clamps when I remove the sails at the end of the season. Leaving the filament threaded thru the sail should make it easier to set up in the spring.
