Johnson lever question

Yes I was planning to do that, there is no toggle on the anchor roller now. I wouldn't mind having toggles at both ends of the forestay and removing the turnbuckle alltogether which in my opinion is a hidden source of potential trouble. Unfortunately there is no way of inserting the stay in the furler foil.... because the T is too wide. I would be interested in knowing how to solve that problem. I noticed you don't have a CDI furler so things might be different for you.
Yes please send me a PM , I too feel that I am overstaying my welcome in this thread. :)

I put a toggle between my lever and anchor roller, not sure if you did that, a good idea if not, keeps it all running fair as they say. ...Bob
I agree about the toggle, They (CDI for sure) want one at the top and bottom. I used...

The one above for the top and...

... this one at the bottom. They will make your forestay live longer and you don't want it breaking,

You could make a new forestay for not much money. Most West Marine stores have a nicopress crimper you can use for free. Or you can buy one (http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?path=-1|10918|2303347|2079490&id=147360) for not too much, even less if you look around at a sailing club garage sale. Good to keep one on your Mac if you get far from home, easy to repair your rigging.

Ill post here since Im wondering what Bob did with his Shaefer 500 install and also regarding the nicopress.

I ordered a new forestay from "rigging supply" (I think you can find a link in Sumners write up) with the turnbuckle hardware installed at the bottom of the wire but I had to install the nicopress at the top. I did this by taking the old forestay and pinning it on a fence with two 5/16 in diameter posts. I then just made the new forstay using the two posts with the new turnbuckle in the mid adjusted position.. The pictures show the top mast attachment including the toggle (I did not need to move the attachment point on the mast).

The question I have for Bob is how did you deal with the external halyard? I picked the Shaefer 500 because it has the external halyard but I understand you have to be careful or the halyard can get wrapped when you furl the sail - which of course would NOT be a good thing. The pictures show what I did and since doing this Ive seen two other installs where someone had used an internal (to the mast) halyard. I dont think I will have a problem with halyard wrap.. but as mentioned, I have not used this yet in any wind let alone high winds. Anyhow.. any pictures of what you did would be interesting. I really like that furler.. but its hard to get any advice on how to get that halyard right at the top especially with the fractional rig..

Walt I'm ....

...wondering if you probably won't have a problem since there isn't much there to wrap.

I did find a picture of what is suggested (see above) but in that case they have a lot of halyard at the top that could wrap. I'm guessing you are not going to have a problem but will be interested in what Bob has to say,

Hi Walt, I followed the tips in the install manual for the Snapfurl 500 http://www.schaefermarine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/CF-500-Installation-Manual.pdf and used the supplied restrainer bracket and my original block I think. I'll check in my old laptop tomorrow to see if I have any pictures of that part. It looks like your setup should be fine if you can get full tension on your jib before the splice tries to go into the block. I don't think halyard wrap should be a concern, nice solution.
You are right it is a very nice piece of gear.
Fair winds, Bob

Wow. Took me a while to just search in a web browser "app not working".

Glad to be back. Was feeling a little lost

This has made the official "winter project list" along with a few other gems. Is there a simple rule in ordering the new forestay to accommodate this? Like "three inches shorter than what we are currently using" or something like that? I assume the same measurement would be how much you take off the furler foil too?

Ordering new forestay - you should read the manual of your furler in detail and understand how it works. Also read how Sumner did his - I think there is a link a few posts back. FYI, the stock forestay wire size is 1/8. I went a little larger to 5/32 like others have done but its probably not necessary especially if you properly toggle.

I added a picture of my turnbuckle that is inside the furler drum (just working on this today). This is nice to get whatever tension you want - but really bad if the turnbuckle rotates. Im using stainless steel wire in a figure 8 that I think will keep things secure.

I also adjusted things at the top a little so put in another picture of the halyard attachment. I will probably try this out within a week or so.
