Hi, while installing new organizer on deck, i realized that the bolt holding it is not screwing cause the nut underneath the surface keeps turning. Now, I can,t wether remove it or tightening it cause the nut won't stop spinning . I ' d rather not go inside the boat and make a hole to remove the nut. Any idea !!

I'm afraid it sounds as if you will have to cut it regardless. You still have to have a nut on the underside don't you?

Unless you pull it out with a crowbar and glass over the hole.

Im not sure I understand the full issue and how the nut got there to begin with, but just going on what i assume, if it were me, im pretty sure i would go with Chris's idea of scoring the deck around the bolt so the nut could be pulled out in a controlled manner, then glassing it over and re-drill the hole so you can install a backing plate and nuts from the inside... the organizer (or a larger bedding plate under it) will cover any ugly that is left behind on the deck, so a perfectly matching glass job is not mandatory.

but then on second thought, if the boat has a glass liner that is in the way, it is possible to gently cut a nice clean hole in the liner (a harbor freight vibrating multi-tool works great for this) so you can access the nuts between the coachroof and liner, then trim the cutout piece with either wood or some durable plastic to make a cover for the hole... and it will look nice.

Sounds like you are going to be removing your cabin head liner to get at that nut / backing plate. I'm sure one of the Catalina owners will know the drill.

A hole saw without the pilot bit?

Lowes sells bung hole covers. They are black rubber and will fit nicely in the hole if you cut it the right size. I'd use a hole cutting saw if you have one. I've used them on my boat when I needed to cut a hole to run electric line.

try pulling the organiser upward as way to put tension on the nut. Hopefully the bolt could be turn with nut not moving. For leverage jam a screw driver under the organiser. Might damage deck gelcoat but it can be repair or cover up.

I second Ken's suggestion. Sometimes a little upward pressure will stop the nut from turning. Oh, and I wouldn't try using a hole saw without the pilot bit, that could get really ugly.

The Catalina 28s have aluminum plates embedded in the deck with tapped holes for mounting deck clutches, and the clam cleat.
These are either side of the companionway near the winches. I'll guess they did the same for the deck organizers since the bolts don't come through ( at least on the older 28 mark 1).
As suggested, upward pressure to back the screw out, then try to tap for the next larger screw..Catalina Direct answers tech questions, or try the Catalina 28 users group on yahoo for specifics..
