I have read the same thing, that in the vent of a collision the sea lawyers would jump right on the replacement bulbs as evidence that a boat was not properly lighted because she was using an unapproved or altered set of navigation lights, and therefore was a major contributor to the collision, regardless of the circumstances. I don't know if this story is an urban myth or true. The remedy might be to replace the existing fixture with a matching, approved one that now comes with LED lights.
