Repowering Hunter 30

Ahoy,

I am considering re-powering my 1979 Hunter 30 with a YSM12 to a Yanmar 2GMF. To those who have done this: How difficult was it, did the motor mounts fit the rails, how noticeable was the power increase, did it fit well in the engine compartment and what is your typical cruising speed and with what prop. And of course how expensive was it?

Do you feel it was worth the effort?
I know, a lot of questions but that said....answers to any of then will be helpful.

Kind regards,
Bob

1. No trouble at all....I let the chief mechanic install it.
I did remove the quarter berth bulkhead and the step platform first, then re-installed.

2. The rails are too wide. Simple fix is to add angle (Upside down L) brackets made of wood or metal left and right.

3. Power increase is GREAT. I now cruise at 7 kts @3000 RPM. Had to change to a three bladed prop.

4. Fits VERY well. But, Its lighter than the YSM 12, believe it or not.

5. Cost will be determined by the engine seller and who does the install.
My cost $5k all in and WELL worth it! :wow:

Thanks for the info. The whole idea of re-powering is sounding more interesting. I have crossed Lake Ontario many times and it seems without exception it frequently involves quite a bit of motoring. The difference between <5 and >6 knots would be....significant!
Cheers,
Bob

You're very welcome and good luck.

G,

I see in your response to the owner of the "78" Hunter 30 owner that you mentioned you have a three bladed prop. So, a few more questions:

1. What size prop did you go to?
2. Did you have to shorten your prop shaft or alter the angle?
3. Not talking about ultimate top speed, what speed and RPM do you typically cruise at in calm, flat seas?

Thank you again!
Bob
