Is $5k reasonable for a rough 78 C30?

I have to echo the comments above recommending caution. You will always find lots of things to fix on an old boat - nature of the beast. I found the ad for the boat you're looking at https://olympic.craigslist.org/boa/5154650613.html Even doing all the work yourself, you're going to spend at least 10K, probably more to bring it up to the level of a safe, comfortable cruiser. I would also question what the engine rebuild included - that doesn't really look like a fresh engine.

To contrast there is another on craigslist that is 10 years newer in Sequim asking just 8500 more than you're considering to offer that looks like it has been well cared for and maintained. It has an outboard instead of an Atomic but I think many would prefer that setup.

The engine was trash since there was a foot and half of water when I got the boat. 15 hp o/b is more than enough. Cut the port end of the counter to only one sink and also the F/b. It is more spacious now.

to second maine sail.

ten years ago i bought a pristine '91 for 40k which seemed like a very big price. since then i have maybe missed three days of sailing for repairs- in ten years - and the boat is still probalby worth at least 35; net loss of 5k in ten years of sailing a very late mkii with a walk through stern, good sails, tip tip engine, and still no other problems.
