OKyou Mac Guys:

Wife has given me an ultimatum on a new foam mattress, but I read that Tempur Pedic mattresses don't handle getting wet well.

We have teenagers. 'Nuf said.

What has everyone used instead of their foam?

I used a memory foam mattress topper. It is 2 1/2" open cell with 1 1/2" memory foam on top. The Admiral and I like it so much, I just made one for the rear berth as well. (not that we've ever had guests... but we might at some point). I can't speak to how it handles moisture...

I ordered a California King mattress topper, and it was only slightly too big, (in the aft corners).

the best setup I tried was some 4" foam, and a harder 1" foam on the top.

air mattresses were too thick, and hard to adjust amt of air for 2 people.

sumner had a source for foam... think he used 2 different density foams.

My question was about waterproofing i.e. the foam dissolving when it got wet.

Not sure if this is what you meant but there is a fast dry foam type stuff used in upholstery for outdoor furniture. It drains right through. But that's not "waterproof" - it's just fast drying and doesn't absorb water. It's not so much a foam - it's more of a fibrous pad.

As for waterproofing - I'd think a waterproof covering is the only option you have but I think breathability might then be a concern and you'd soak sheets trying to sleep. Although......I'm thinking now about the Bimini top we made this summer out of a roll end of outdoor fabric I had laying around here. I used a full can of uv / waterproofing silicone spray and the fabric still has a nice "touch" to it. Maybe it's doable that way? Not sure if any adverse health effects or flammability concerns.....

I'v heard of some folks using Thompson Water Seal. Was that what you used?

It's not a wet issue...it's a foam dissolving issue. The damn foam is expensive!

There are several places on the net that sell dryfast foam. Check it out. You can actually pour water right through the foam. Dries pretty fast. We used dryfast for the other cushions but for the bed we used Lux foam that was 4 inches thick but we no longer have teenagers. We also put a drideck under the bed so air can circulate. Check out The Foam Factory and Sailrite for your foam.

So are you saying that you have heard that Tempur Pedic foam disolves?

I haven't heard of this being a problem and the foam from ...

http://www.thefoamfactory.com/

.... and their cheaper outlet the...

http://www.foamdistributing.com/

...haven't dissolved when wet.

The second link above doesn't cut to size but it is a lot cheaper for the same foam that you can get from their 'cut to size' site (1st link). A cheap electric carving knife is all you need to make clean and fast cuts.

I have....

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/endeavour-canvas/canvas-15.html
.... the Lux High quality in both boats. The 3 inch thickness is very firm and your knees don't go through when kneeling on it and the thinner thickness gives you more headroom in the V-Berth.

...Ruth and I used their dry fast for the cockpit cushions in both boats ( http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/macgregor2/outside-31-a.html ).

I haven't found cheaper prices than ...

http://www.foamdistributing.com/

... for equivalent foam and they ship free if the order is over $100. For smaller orders their other site ships free for orders over $75.

Note: We all seem to like different firmness of foam so what I like might not be what you like so keep that in mind but the Foam Factory offers foam in different densities and qualities....

http://www.thefoamfactory.com/seatcushion/foamtypes.html

...... For something less dense than the Lux High Quality I'd probably go to a 4 inch thickness.

Now I'm curious to hear about this notion of a "dry deck". Makes sense to me. How is it constructed without losing too much more of the available height in the berths?

Its called Dri Dek not dry deck. It is 12" X 12" squares that snap together. It is about 1/2 inch in height. They sell it several places including west marine. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Sum, it is good to hear from you! Glad you are safe.

I wasn't sure what I was told was true, but am about to re-foam all the cushions and had heard rumors tempur pedic had a water problem. Same for latex.

Thanks for responding back. I was leaning toward the high lux too, in 3 inches, but with a 1-2 inch tp topper.

ot: I Had the dri dek tiles on the cabin floor. it spreads the impact loading, and allows water and dirt to pass, and keep the sole dry.

however it is hard on the knees.

its very similar to garage deck tiles.
