Does anyone have an idea of how to secure a pop top Catalina 22 so that winches can be mounted on top?

What are you intending to use the winches for?

Reason I ask is that I re-rigged our 1981 pop-top to have our halyards led aft. Never saw a need for winches.

Agreed with Stu. Every scenario I have ever been on with a C22 allowed hand-tensioned lines. The two examples that required extra include main and jib halyard. The issue with the main is draft too-far aft. Easily fixed with a downhaul.

The other is jib scallops and draft too far aft. Remove jib scallops with a tensioned backstay and adjust draft with fairleads.

A C22 is almost usually a hand-tensioned affair.

The winches make a great place to coil the halyards on..

I kept my halyards 1/4 inch and ran them aside the top and just cleat them off. If the boat were bigger I could see the need for winches but then there would be way more room for them as well. I also use down hauls, makes life so easy when single handed. But some have installed winches, I suppose its what is comfortable for the owner.

AZGUY - it is duck soup when someone has removed the handrails that take up all the space you are mounting the winches and and jam cleats in. Most of us still have the handrails thee although the utility is pretty low as you have to stoop to use them going forward and also have to keep them teaked etc.

winches mounted on to the poptop??? this is not a good idea as it will overstress the poptop mounting hardware and cause the top to be pulled loose from the boat.

if you want to keep the pop top working as a pop top, there is no safe or feasible way you can secure the pop top to be able to have working winches mounted on it.

you can glass it down and make it solid, but then it isnt a pop top anymore...

From your comment I assume that the early boats have less room beside the pop-top than the New style ?

I ask, because all the New Style boats I've seen, have winches beside the handrails from factory.

It would make sense, since the hull liner is missing the shelves so the cabin top might also be wider.

Appreciate tips and advice. Agree that poptop won't take the winch under load stress. Agree that Main sail cunningham will negate need for main winch. Having a winch for the jib would be to get the hank "Fan Wrinkles" out. Maybe it's the foresail's problem with dacron stretched longer than the bolt rope???? All line led aft already. Had 2 extra winches. May use them for spinnaker winches.

Yes the spacing between the edges of poptop and handrails is smaller on my boat which is a 83, I did not see any handrails in your picture though. I am attaching picture of my deck.
