I want to install a sound bar for use with the 12v flat screen tv on the boat. The bar I have in mind requires 18 vdc. Is there an inexpensive solution?

Or you could do what I did. Rather than install a soundbar, I connected the TV to the AUX connection of my 12 volt music system. Now when I want better TV sound for movies, I just feed the sound through the stereo and I'm done.

Quite simply, instead of an "inverter" you need a "converter" to change 12 volts DC to 18 volts DC. As mentioned, you will need to know the power requirements (watts/amps) and find a suitable one. The good news is that they are not expensive. The bad news is that they use some power in the conversion.

If your boat is equipped with an inverter, just plug in the sound bar using the 120V converter that came in the box and enjoy your shows sound. Some of the new electronic components are voltage fluctuation sensitive and the 12V system is more prone to fluctuations in the branch circuits that its 120V counterpart. If you got adequate battery bank capacity there is no need to concern yourself with the efficiency ratings for each method. If you do not have an inverter then installing one might not be the cheapest way to run your sound bar but the expense of one could be spread around running power tools, lamps and many other appliances and electronics.
