I currently use hank-on foresails but am thinking about purchasing a Schaefer Snapfurl CF-500 Roller Furler for next season. If anyone has any experience using this system, I'd love to hear your pros and cons.

I keep the boat in a slip throughout the season and leave it on the trailer with the mast up during winter, so frequent stepping of the mast or trailering isn't an issue regarding ease of installation.

I put a Schaefer Snapfurl on the last two trailer able boats I owned, one furler was a 500, the other a 700. They were both easy to install and worked well for trailering. I wet slipped both boats but did lots of trailering to other places each season. So they did get a good workout. The company gives great support.

On the second boat I installed the 700 because I was so unhappy with the CDI furler. I could easily reef the jib with the Schaefer, never a tangle in the drum, the jib halyard tension can be adjusted easily.

The slot in the foil needs to have a sail with the correct tape installed if you want it to easily go up and down. The manual specifies the size required. There will be a piece of the snap furler foil left over. Bring it to your sail loft so they can check their tape size before sewing it to your sail.

If any of this is not clear please let me know.

Good luck, Bob

I have the CF-500 on my C-250 and it works great. Be sure to get the optional fair lead/bracket that attaches to the under side of the cage. Before I had this fair lead the line would not always spool correctly. Sorry, I don't have a picture of the fair lead installed but it did fix the issue 100%.

Have sailed a Catalina 22 and keep it moored at a dock since 1993. I would put my money in new sails and a bigger inventory. I sail on larger boats at the bay with furlers and they are great because of the size of the boats.

Hanking on a 22 foot sail is nothing, sail shape is everything on a small light boat.

Watercolors, I don't mind the hanking on - I'm just looking for options while I consider running all lines aft. My first mate and wife is no sailor, and more than once she's let the bow fall off the wind, and confused port and starboard while I'm up front raising the sails, resulting in me hanging on for dear life while we turn tight circles on the bay. So you see, there's safety and marital harmony factors to consider as well.

That's really funny, I just had that experience while I was hanking on the jib last Saturday. I get the sail raised and on the way back to the cockpit the admiral gets off the wind and away we go heeling way over, I almost took a dunk in the Nuese. I would love to run my lines aft after that experience :)

I'm not really familiar with the Cat 22 so this might not work. On my other boats I have hooked a bungee between my tiller and the end of my boom to keep the boat pointed into the wind while the main is up. Might be worth a try, much cheaper than a furler or a divorce

I don't have the snapfurl so I cant really help much with a specific.

But I am docked boat only comes out about once a year so the issues with a furler don't really apply to my situation.

With that I have a cdi and my furler was the best upgrade I did to my boat sail in and out all the way or part way no wet sails in the boat more storage for other stuff.

Anyway snapfurl cdi or whatever If my furler took a crap it would be replaced asap.
