W/C Seacock

Hi all,

If you heard a loud obnoxious noise yesterday in New England, that was me cussing. I had been turning my seacocks for an upcoming trip and noticed a build up of green crust on the side of my W/C seacock. (I think the W over the rocker denotes W/C) Anyway I decided to take the drain screw out to inspect it. (Should have read Mainsail's instructions for seacock maintenance a little closer) It looked kind of copper-like and the threads were nearly gone. I screwed it back in but it would just spin around in the hole. I took it out and noticed the threads were gone and it snapped off.

Now most people would stop right there but that's when my DIY kicks in. I look at the screw on the other side and began to take it out. My thinking is I could get another one if I had to show a good one to the parts guy. Well that one fell off before I could line up the wrench. (they were square heads) I took the remaining parts to the service manager and tried to explain what happened and that I would need replacements.

In looking at them he noticed right away that they were brass instead of bronze, hence the copper color. (Dissimilar metals causing the problem.) Well if the hole wasn't stripped out they could order proper replacements.

They were able to tap out the holes since there wasn't much left of the screws and order the bronze screws. The kicker is I have several of these seacocks on the boat and now I'm just a little hot about why someone went this route. :cussing::bang::cussing::bang:

I don't THINK that W stands for W-C (Wilcox-Crittenden)... 'cuz I don't think they ever made brass seacocks or anything else, only bronze. Everything they made was top quality. Unfortunately, they're no longer in business...Thetford bought the company just to get their toilets, and then discontinued all those too.

The seacock is bronze but the little plug was brass. Its a shame about the toilets.
