I think this should be edited to the "very low probability". This makes it sound like shark attacks are likely. They are not even common place never mind likely.
Well then, JK, it sounds like you can deal with it. Maybe I'll see you out there someday! But I KNOW I'll see lots of sharks and barracuda.

We were in the BVI's anchored in Little Harbor. My wife and I were going to snorkel around before lunch. I was going to check the anchor and she was just going to look at fish. We had chartered a cat and I was sitting on the large swim platform putting on my fins when a shark swam right by my dangling foot. It seems our friends had decided to make chicken salad and opeded and drained the canned chicken juice doown the drain. MORAL: Don't forget where the juice you pour down the boat drain goes.

Thank you

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for your moral support. Even my wife appreciated it. It really goes to show that I picked the right place! You folks are the BEST!

There has been a lot of hype lately about sharks. I've been in and around salt water for my entire adult life and never had a problem with sharks. I'm not sure if it will help but can can let her know that more people are killed by cows every year than by sharks.

Here's the definitive word on sharks.
Edit: Video removed due to perceived racist remarks. I also found references to fat people, people-eating bear, meat-ministers being eaten by sharks, chickens being killed and eaten, God, Jesus and The Lord. Also pigs being killed and eaten. Plus numerous grammatical errors that could be viewed as demeaning.

Well, that video is a great illustration of why it is safer in the ocean than in a car.

About fear: I don't believe it helps the fearful person when other people dismiss the validity of the fear or sugar-coat the facts:

more people are killed by cows every year than by sharks.

Jay
People in the water do not get killed by cows; they don't get hit by vending machines. People in the water do drown and they do get attacked by sharks. While swimming in the ocean, you are far more likely to get bitten by a shark than you are to be involved in an car crash.

So why do I continue to dive and hunt in the ocean? Because I have educated myself on how drownings and shark attacks are most likely to occur and I take steps to avoid those situations. I have great respect for the awesome power of nature and I am humble in my complete powerlessness and total lack of importance in the big picture. That way I can enjoy swimming in shark habitat, skiing in avalanche terrain, and paddling mighty rapids. Death from an avalanches is not a statistical probability for the general public, but it is the leading cause of death to people who are in avalanche-prone terrain.

Be fearful of sharks, tread lightly in their house, and don't throw food scraps overboard when your boat is anchored near where people swim. End of sermon.

If your worried about being attacked by a crazed animal, think twice about coming to Australia. 90% of the animals here are out o kill you.

Don't forget that Bull Sharks are relatively common in freshwater rivers. they have been found as far in land as Illinois.

I am sorry to ask such a silly question but...
My wife is freaked about the idea of sailing out of the lake, IE: ICW or the keys or Caribbean waters. "Not that we are doing any of that in the next few years"
Q: Has anyone sailed in open water and had issues with sharks, killer whales, or any other extra large sea going animals you would consider dangerous? Thank you so much.
Many times all through the east coast of Florida to Bahamas and Keys. No such issues whatsoever! Tell your wife to relax. The only fins she will see on the surface are Dolphins!

you need to worry about two things that will REALLY hurt you: running aground, and much more dangerous than sharks or whales: POWERBOATERS<.>

In your wife’s defense, it sure seemed like we heard about more shark attacks than normal this year. Even a kid from Colorado got attacked (on vacation) which is closer to home.
