Hunter 19 Spruce Run
I bought a 1983 Hunter 19 this winter and its my first boat. It came from ebay so as-is. It looks complete but cabin, cockpit and bilge were very full of ice. I'm only now getting it drained. The wood panels in the cabin that give access to the keel pin holder were rotted, but maybe the hardware is okay. I plan to float it above the trailer and look down through this panel into the bilge to see if water comes in. Is this a good plan?

Also I keep reading about a water ballast for the hunter19, but maybe that's for the later models? I don't think this 1983 hunter 19 has a water ballast. If it does then I have no idea how it works. I saw a plug low on the transom, but I think that's just tilt the trailer and drain the bilge. I'm pretty sure that if I opened that plug the cabin would flood.

Thanks for any help. Matt

two different boats and the earlier version I do not know the bilge or centerboard attachment...

take a photo of the bilge and check first in the water. Take a flashlight with you.

Thanks Crazy Dave. photos uploaded.

After crawling around, this centerboard mechanism looks like a concern. The caulk is falling out around the metal and there are hairline cracks in the fiberglass. I can't see any cracks from the inside, but it strikes me as a weak point. When the board swings down maybe it fits snug in its well, otherwise one good whack and there might be problems.

Told the owner to recaulk the centerboard hangers and the gudgeons for the rudder and then check for water penetration. Then go from there. Also advised on new tires if there is any dry rot and so forth,

Tom;

You will have to learn to navigate thru this site. Use the forum site and also the Owner resources for boat information and look up your model to include the downloads which has an owner manual.

tks but I have a few questions that will disclose my ignorance
what kind of sails are available on the 19 - I know there is a main and a spinnanaker
Now I see there is a "working Jib" are there other kinds of jibs? is there a genoa?
Does I stand for leech?
Does J stand for foot?
Is there a letter that stands for luff?

do a quick search on how to measure a jib. Sloops can use 4 sails. Main, jib, Genoa, spinnerker

Over the years, the size of sails or dimensions have been cataloged which the sail lofts can research or look up. However, for this boat, go to the owner resources, pull up the model and pull up specs as you will need the I,P,J & E measurements for the sail loft in the event they do not have any. If it is an old sail, good always to send it to the sail loft if replacing it.
