How to control spiders on your boat?

Great! You're ok, while Bald Eagles were nearly extinct as a direct result of DDT. Now that DDT is prohibited, we have eagles becoming almost commonplace in many areas where they had never been seen in my lifetime (it seems we have some nesting adjacent to Lake Hopatcong). I think I prefer eagles over DDT (not that I'm forgetting that malaria kills humans).

BTW, I read the link that talks about Brown Recluse bites. It seems that they aren't necessarily all that dangerous ... it's the staph infection that does the damage. Are you sure he didn't get a staph infection from any old small wound? The range of Brown Recluse doesn't seem to include NJ.

Do you know that DDT has now been totally debunked? It had NO effect on birds shells for birds that ate dead ants. Geeezzzz! World Health Organization estimates that Millions have died since banning DDT. Bald eagles don't eat ants. Read this and its links for the truth. Rachel Carsons committed genocide!

I didn't have Staph. The Recluse spider excretes an enzyme ( not a poison ). The enzyme eats flesh.

BTW my antibiotic was an old weak one, but it helped heal the infection.

Or are you subscribing to the notion that there are no dangers with indiscriminate use of antibiotics, pesticides and other chemical poisons?
Hell no!

But don't let the good use scare you!

Jim...

PS: mutters... calm down Jim, this is about spiders and not chemical fears. Drinks a schooner of cold beer. Ahhhhh!!!

Not the War Room!

That description seems to conflict with the web site descriptions (even the one linked in this thread) which say the bite can be serious for young children and people with very weak immune systems, but most often is not so dangerous to a healthy adult. The necrosis doesn't necessarily happen. But this is kind of silly to discuss in relationship to the post, because I dare say nobody is going to find a Brown Recluse on their boat ... it's not the environment that this kind of spider prefers.

Did you know that maybe 500,000 people went to Woodstock (in 1969), but probably about 15 million say that they were there? Just sayin ... :D

I don't think Brown Recluse spider bites are high on the list of dangers that are faced on a sailboat. But if you DO find a Brown Recluse on your boat, with my permission, break out that can of Raid! ;)

I'd hate to see this go to the War Room ... we'd be left with "yet another battery thread" and the raging steaming light controversy just isn't doing it for me! :D

That's what happened to my friend, the flesh on his back was being eaten away.
I'm not saying spraying his boat would have prevented this mishap but whether one choses to spray their boat or home for insects is a personal choice. There does come a point when a balance is needed.

I think in todays modern world with freight being transported over the road, rail, water & air, it's foolish to think that creatures have boundaries anymore.

My beer wore off.

I was listening to news when I heard about the plague in Yosemite National Park.

Before I could tell the Government to get volunteer STOMPERS, SLAPPERS AND SQUISH-ERS, they went and used a pesticide to kill the carrier fleas. OMG:doh:. and they didn't relocate the Bald Eagels in the park.

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-plague-infected-squirrels-20150814-story.html

They must like squirrels and people and (evil tourist trade money) more than the use of a pesticide.

I am writing my Congressman.

Jim...

PS: I am sorry, my evil twin is doing this post. I am still drinking beer.;)

Using SpiderKills in a squirt bottle. Strong enough they are dancing in circles in seconds and dead a few more seconds later. Spray it into places where they hide and they come crawling out. Pretty happy with the results.
