Water holding tanks Hunter 34

Hi;I'm trying to figure out the plumbing for water holding tanks. There is a valve adjacent to the port tank. Can it be positioned so that the two tanks (stern and port) connect to each other or do I have to turn the valve to switch between tanks when one goes dry?

Thanks. Ilan

I can never remember from year to year, I generally disconnect tank lines after running antifreeze during winterization and have to test each spring to set for the port tank as I do not fill the stern tank to keep a better balance. That said I have not done long distance cruises either. I do think either is correct and makes sense.

Re: Water tanks Hunter 34

IIRC, it's been reported to be a Y valve, so it is either not both.

That is better anyway. We have two separate valves to a header pipe. I only use one at a time. Why? 'Cuz then you KNOW when one of the two tanks is empty and you can refill it. No need for expensive tank monitors! :)

PS - No "holding" in water tanks. Holding is for the head output.

Same here, three way or "Y" valve as Stu says, either but not both... The aft tank is higher than the port side so if you open 'em both, the aft will drain into the port side .. Lots of folks use only the port side tank unless going out for a long time. A dry aft tank makes for a faster boat.. On trips where that aft tank is needed, most folks use it first then switch to port tank ..
some folks have made a little manifold instead of the three way valve.. A manifold would allow either or both to feed the pump. Aft is supposed to be 30 gallons (250 pounds) and port is 35 gallons (290 pounds)..
AS my three way valve failed, it began to let air from the empty aft tank get into the pump suction causing a lot of spitting at the faucets.

I replace my 3 way valve as shown in the attached picture... Note that when the picture was taken, I hadn't yet secured it down. You can see the 3 way port selection positions written under the PEX. -Jon
